SCHLATT, Marion Peter, 90, of Wheeling, died Monday, January 5, 2009, in East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio.
Marion was born May 16, 1918, in Lamira, Ohio, a son of the late Peter and Agnes (Burkhart Fifer) Schlatt.
He was the former owner and operator of the Tropicana Club and the Downs Grill, Wheeling; the former owner of thoroughbred horses in the State of West Virginia; a former glass cutter in Washington, Pa.; a member of St. Joseph Cathedral, Wheeling; and was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in the 2nd Air Service Squadron, 5th Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II.
In addition to his parents, Marion was preceded in death by four sisters, Ann Wargnier, Mary Luburich Farrington, Barbara "Joan" Yaneck and Cecelia Biernot; and four brothers, Frank, Michael, Thomas and Stanley Schlatt.
Marion is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ann J. (Socha) Schlatt; a nephew, Frank J. Socha of Wheeling; a sister, Helen Saboley of Worthington, Ohio; a brother, John Schlatt and his wife, Mary, of Redding, Calif.; and several other loving nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Thursday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 3:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, January 9, 2009, at St. Joseph Cathedral, Wheeling, with the Very Rev. Kevin Quirk as celebrant.
Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, with full military honors provided by the Moundsville Veterans Honor Guard.
