- Christ Voegele Rites Held on Friday, Dec. 26 -- Prominent Early-Day Homesteader And Retired Farmer Dies Christmas Eve --
Christian Voegele, son of John and Katherina Voegele, was born on March 27 [sic], 1862, in Glueckstal, South Russia. He grew to manhood in Russia in the Lutheran church where he was also confirmed. In 1890 he was married to Katherina Jundt. To this union eleven children were born.
In 1905 the family came to the United States and settled in the community near Bowdle, South Dakota. In 1910 they took up an homestead 18 miles north of Hebron. In 1929 they moved to Hebron were they have lived until the time of his death.
He united with the Evangelical church in 1910 and in 1929 he was converted to God. He stayed true to his Lord and his church until the end of his life. The last couple of months he spent on his sick bed, suffering from cancer and dropsy. He was not able to speak much the last two weeks of his life. He would but express the wish, "Home, sweet, home," and the last two days always said, "I am going home."
At the time of his death he was 79 years, 8 months and 25 days old. He passed to the beyond on December 24, 1941, at 7:45, while most people were enjoying the Christmas programs. Five brothers, three sisters and seven children preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife; one son, John, Hebron; three daughters, Katie, Mrs. John Unruh, Beulah; Frieda, Mrs. Emmanuel Teske, Zap; and Anna, Mrs. Ernest Bratzel of Hebron; and 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral services were held at the First Evangelical Church on Friday, December 26 at 2:00 P. M. with Rev. S. G. Gruneich officiating. The Elmer sisters assisted in the services by songs of comfort.
Pallbearers were Conrad Click, Wm. Metzger, Jacob Walz, Gottfred Sailer, John Elmer and Christ Metzger.
