Naomi Opp Voegele
RAPID CITY - Naomi Opp Voegele, 84, of Rapid City, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at a local nursing home.
Naomi was born on Aug. 5, 1916, northeast of Long Lake, S.D., in McPherson County, to Jacob J. and Elizabeth (Schock) Spitzer. She grew up in the Long Lake area and attended schools in the Leola school system. Naomi worked on the family farm until 1941. She married Robert Opp on Sept. 28, 1941. The couple lived on a farm located six miles northeast of Long Lake. One son, Douglas, was born on Nov. 20, 1948.
In 1968, the family moved to Rapid City. Naomi worked as a nurse's aide for Bennett Clarkson Hospital and Adams Nursing Home for 13 years. On Sept. 23, 1981, Robert passed away. Naomi continued to live in Rapid City until May of 1984. On May 23, 1984, she married Edwin Voegele and the couple made their home in Aberdeen, where Naomi did volunteer work for R.S.V.P. Ed Voegele passed away on July 20, 1998, and Naomi moved back to Rapid City in October of 1999.
Naomi was a member of the Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Long Lake, where she was involved with the American Lutheran Church Women (ALCW) and taught Sunday school for 15 years. She was also a member of South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City and was involved with the ALCW there.
Survivors include a son, Douglas R. Opp of Yorktown, Va.; one sister, Edna Opp of Rapid City; one brother, Samuel Spitzer, Eureka, S.D.; four grandchildren, Janine E. Opp, Nathalie N. Opp, Stephen D. Opp and Garrett M. Opp, all of Yorktown; two stepdaughters, Arvilla Felten of Brainerd, Minn., and Marlene Schroeder of Shawnee, Kan.; seven step-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren. Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two sisters, Erna Fauth and Ruth Schmitt, and one brother, Boas Spitzer.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 5, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, at South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.
