Emma Johanna Roe, 93, Bismarck, formerly of the Underwood-Washburn area, died Aug. 19, 2001, in a local care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Baptist Home Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Clyde Leimberer officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.
Emma Schell was born Oct. 16, 1907, in South Dakota, the daughter of John and Albina (Stoebner) Schell, who later farmed near Underwood. She attended Underwood grade and high school, graduating from high school in 1927. She then attended Minot State Teachers College and taught several years in rural schools in the Underwood area.
Emma married Guy A. Roe of Washburn on June 10, 1943. They farmed southwest of Underwood and then moved to Bismarck in 1950. Guy suffered a stroke and resided at the Baptist Home while Emma lived at the Baptist Apartments, eventually also residing at the Baptist Home. Guy died in December 1985. They had no children.
Emma will be remembered as a good person who loved children, teaching, reading, farming, gardening, cooking and baking. She remained faithful and active in her membership to Bismarck Baptist Church. She was involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship for many years.
She is survived by two sisters and one brother-in-law, Stella (Schell) Ash, Underwood, and Ruth (Schell) and J. Spencer Overhalser, Wyomissing, Pa.; and her friends and caregivers, Elaine and Leonard Steinert.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy; her parents; five sisters, Otillia, Edna, Elma, Wanda and Joan; and one brother, Don. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
