A Mass of Christian burial for Paul James Haren, Sr., 86, of Sonora, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Zanesville, with Fr. Leo Connolly, celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Zanesville, with VFW Post 1058 conducting military services.
Mr. Haren died Friday, June 10, 2005, at Genesis Morrison House Hospice following a lengthy illness. He was born May 5, 1919, in Barnesville, the son of Roman and Mary (Wittmer) Haren.
He married Bertha (Harden) Haren on Feb. 3, 1940, and was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. He was a graduate of Bellaire High School.
Paul was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 101st Airborne Anti-Aircraft BN. He was a life member of both the VFW Post 1058 and Knights of Columbus Council 505. He was instrumental in erecting the veteran's monument at St. Paul Cemetery.
He was one of the organizing founders of Perry Township Fire Department, where he served as Charter Chief. He retired following 39 years of service from the Ohio Power, Philo Plant. He served as coach of little league at Perry and Sonora baseball fields and enjoyed woodworking, sporting events, gardening and veteran's memorabilia.
In addition to his wife, of the home, Paul is survived by five daughters, Marlene (Robert) Whissel, Maxine (Harold) West, Jane (Dave) Leasure, Jean West, and Misty (Matt) Grimm, all of Zanesville; five sons, Paul James II (Diana) Haren, of Newark, Joseph C. (Trudie) Haren, Michael A. (Linda) Haren, Jeffrey A. Haren, and Jerome A. (Lisa) Haren, all of Zanesville; one brother, Richard A. Haren, of Sonora; two sisters-in-law, Betty Russell, of Zanesville and Betty Haren, of Senecaville; 24 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John R. "Bucky" Haren, who died Dec. 20, 1999; two brothers, Clarence C. Haren and Clyde A. Haren.
Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave., Zanesville, where there will be a Christian vigil service at 3:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Genesis Morrison Hospice, Perry Township Fire Department or St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
