Schmitt, 62, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Bronxville, NY, Bernie went to school in Eastchester. He served four years active duty in the US Navy, including serving on board the destroyer USS Frank E. Evans in the Pacific. He was manager of the A & P in Yorktown before his retirement. He worked in several stores in Westchester during his career, and left many friends throughout the A & P system. Bernie was an avid sportsman, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was the beloved father of Jennifer Schmitt of Phoenix, AZ, Philip Schmitt of Yorktown, NY and Joanne Schmitt of Brewster, NY; beloved brother of Gretchen Leserra and Rita Dolan, both of Fairfield, CT, George Schmitt of Lake Tahoe, NV, Francis Schmitt of Pawling, Peter Schmitt of Yorktown, John Schmitt of Summit, NJ, and Joseph Schmitt of Eastchester; and uncle of 28 nieces and nephews and 13 great- nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Maria Dutsar. Friends may call at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling Wednesday and Thursday, 2-5 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 4th at 10 AM at St. Ignatius Retreat House, Ridgefield, CT. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on -Hudson, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
