- [S927] Obituary.
Eugene "Gene" M. NIST 12/4/16 - 3/24/03 Gene was born in Seattle, December 4, 1916. He was a resident of Brown's Point for over 38 years. He spent his early years living in Seattle, graduating from West Seattle High School and then attending Oregon State College studying forestry. He left college to move to Tacoma in 1938 after marrying Carole Tarp. They shared fifty-six years of marriage. Gene took over the management of the Tacoma Box Company in 1938. During the years that followed, his efforts established strong business ties to furniture, mattress and wooden box customers, many of which were still his customers and friends at the time of his death. Gene spent many years of his life expanding the businesses of the Tacoma Box Company and the Seattle-Tacoma Box Company in the Hawaiian Islands. Gene spent over 65 years working for the Seattle Tacoma Box Company and was the Chairman of the Board. Gene was involved in many organizations during his life. He was past president of the Young Mens' Business Club, the Tacoma Sportsmen's Club and the Ocean Shores Outdoor Recreation Club. Gene was a 32 degree Scottish Rite, a member of the "Royal Order of Jesters" and Tacoma Elks Lodge #174. He was past Director of the Afifi Shrine Directors Staff and served as the Chairman of the Afifi Shrine Circus for twenty five years. Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent much of his life hunting in the Skagit flats and summers fishing the ocean waters across the Columbia River bar. His efforts in the Tacoma Chapter of Ducks Unlimited earned him "Sportsman of the Year." He was also active in the Washington Duck fowlers. Throughout his life he shared his love of life to all he met. Gene will be dearly missed by his family, friends and business associates. He had a special saying that he said his father always said, "Waste not, want not," and he certainly didn't waste any of his life; wanting nothing but the best for those of us who knew and loved him. Gene is preceded in death by his wife Carole and his brother Emmet. He is survived by his daughter Vicki Butler (Joe), son Michael (Teri), his brother Ferd Nist and sister Patricia Edman, six grandchildren, Patrick Fox (Cindy), Jeffrey Fox (Sabrena), Jake Nist, Katie Nist, Kristi Nist, Joey Nist and three great grandchildren, Trevor, Megan and Makena, many nieces and nephews, by Tom Fox and a special friend Walt Hale. There will be a celebration of Gene's life, Saturday, April 5th, 11 a.m., at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 6800 Eastside Drive N.E. on Brown's Point. In lieu of flowers, please send a remembrance to the Shriner's Hospital For Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson PK. RD., Portland, OR. 97201, c/o Nancy Jones. Gene said, "Never say good-bye, it's Adios."
