Duane Leroy Bender was born April 5, 1935, at Wilton, N.D., the son of Fred Jr. and Sophie (Brenneise) Bender. He was raised on his family's farm near Regan, and attended school in Wilson Township. Duane married Verdeen Buchholz on June 15, 1957, at Zion Lutheran Church in Bismarck. The couple made their home on the Bender farm, north of Regan, for many years. Duane retired from farming operations in 1987. He continued his employment by operating equipment for the Hochhalter farms.
Duane enjoyed a lifelong love of traveling, taking several trips to Alaska with his wife and visiting most of the 50 states. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. His favorite hobby was metal detecting, which he appreciated doing with his grandchildren. Duane took great pride in his grandchildren and enjoyed watching their sports activities. Duane was a born-again Christian and enjoyed practicing his faith as a member of the Mission Evangelical Free Church of Wilton.
Duane is survived by his wife of 46 years, Verdeen Bender, Washburn; one son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Vicky Bender, Regan; two grandchildren, Cordell and Cole Bender, both of Regen; and one sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Ted Blatter, Wilton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
