  [S927] Obituary. Hertha was born May 15, 1920 to Conrad and Katharine (Martel) Hieb at Hosmer, SD. She was raised near Hosmer and attended rural school there. In young adulthood she moved to Aberdeen where she was employed by several families as a housekeeper. During this time she met Elmer Mayer, whom she married on October 8,1941. They moved to Roscoe where they owned Al's Place, a general store, for several years. The store was eventually sold in 1956 when Elmer started Roscoe Real Estate and Insurance. Hertha continued to work part time at the store that became known as Eddie's Place. Hertha was also an accomplished seamstress. She spent many hours creating clothing for Roscoe residents. She even designed and made the Roscoe cheerleading uniforms for many years. Hertha greatly enjoyed visiting with people and her sharp wit and sense of humor led many people to enjoy her company. She routinely prepared dinners for traveling salesmen invited by Elmer into their home. Following Elmer's retirement they greatly enjoyed traveling the coun¬try and meeting new friends at Polka festivals and every place they stopped. After Elmer's death she would spend hours at the Prairie Rose Restaurant in Roscoe to visit with friends. Hertha was an active and faithful member of the Roscoe UCC-Congregational Church. She was also an active citi¬zen of Roscoe where she participated in the Priscilla Club and volunteered her time serving on election boards. Hertha died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007 at Golden Living Center in Ipswich. Thankful for having shared in her life are her two sons, Dale Mayer of Aberdeen and Scott (John Zeches) Mayer of Minneapolis, MN; five grandchildren, Nicole, Shane, Sasha, Bryana, and Jordan; two sisters, Alvina Peterson of Minneapolis and Lorraine Pudwill of Oregon; several half and step brothers; as well as many dear friends.
