Obituary for Carl Sylvanus Heberling
Carl Sylvanus Heberling, Overbrook, KS passed away February 10, 2011. He was born March 12, 1918 in Douglas County to George and Alexis Dezius Heberling. He was a licensed mechanic but loved farming and did so his entire life before he finally retired in 1994. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 485th Army Service Group attached to the Air Corps. He saw action in the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge in Europe. He received five bronze stars and several other French medals. He completed his mechanics training and was Staff Sergeant of Motor Pool. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Topeka and a 65 year member of the Anderson Raible American Legion of Overbrook.
He was married to Irene Desque Heberling on March 2, 1946. She passed away in 2008.
After the war, Carl returned to farm full time. Besides working with row crops, cattle and hogs, he also trained horses at an early age. But he was always ready to change with the times and was one of the early farmers to have a self-propelled combine in the area. He was a true lover of the Oliver tractor and in his retirement years, he entered his restored 88 Oliver Tractor in various antique tractor pulls in the area. He was so successful that at one pull he won the overall best tractor, walking away with the big trophy! He and Irene also donated an antique rock crusher from the farm to the Ottawa Tractor group, who demonstrate with it every year at their September event. He could fix anything?nothing every seemed impossible to him.
In addition, he was always ready to help his sons and their friends restore and customize their cars. He enjoyed it so much that he had several restored cars of his own that he and Irene enjoyed driving to car shows. He was a member of the Antique Auto Club of America in Lawrence, KS for many years, helping with the swap meets and shows.
He and Irene also enjoyed camping, fishing and boating excursions. They traveled, played cards, danced and had fun with their friends. Carl was always ready with a smile and always willing and able to help anyone who needed it. He was ALWAYS happy to see you!
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister, who both died at a very early age.
Surviving members of the family include two sons and their wives, Ron and Mary Heberling and Don and Jan Heberling, all from Overbrook. Carl had one grandson and wife, Jesse and Jamie Heberling of Overbrook and one adopted granddaughter and husband, Kelli and Travis Phippen from Basehor, KS. He had four grandchildren: Lexsey and Lilly Heberling and Makenzi and Cody Phippen. He also has an honorary grandson, Shawn Call.
Carl was cremated and will be buried at Twin Mound Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM., Tuesday, February 15 at the United Methodist Church in Overbrook, where the family will receive friends after 10:00 AM. Tuesday.
