Marilyn Shirley Allred
1939 - 2009
Marilyn was an amazing wife, ?Grammy,? teacher, friend, aunt, and mother to everyone. An inspiring true optimist, she always had a smile on her face that would embrace you. She was a genuine, compassionate and selfless lady whose concern was always about others and never about herself. Her charm and class, along with her never-ending hugs and laughter would brighten any day. One could always trust her discipline and self-assurance that she would get any job done and done right. Marilyn was also extremely motivated and hard working. Her willingness to serve her family and friends and truly share her love with those around her created a supportive atmosphere that others craved.
Marilyn Shirley Allred, age 69, passed away peacefully at her home in Ventura, Calif., on Jan. 8, 2009, after her two-year battle with ovarian cancer. Prior to this, she endured breast cancer and was a 28-year survivor. She never complained, and her patience and cheerful attitude through her afflictions touched every one of us.
She was born June 18, 1939, in Huron, S.D., to Henry Ferdinand and Beatrice Schnabel. She graduated from Huron High School in 1957. After graduation, she moved to Ventura, where she worked as a telephone operator, waitress and later managed the Pierpont Inn for over 10 years. Through mutual friends, she met Ray, her future husband. They later married on July 30, 1966. Together, they spent many years building and remodeling homes and apartments. Eventually, they spent 10 years building their dream home, where they still reside today.
Marilyn was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully throughout her life. She held many responsibilities, including her extensive work in the Genealogical Library. She also coordinated the compassionate service needs of the members, attended the temple regularly and participated in the choir. Her faith in the Lord brought countless people to the Gospel.
Some of Marilyn?s most cherished pastimes were spent in the company of her family and friends. Annually, house boating at Lake Shasta was often a highlight and evoked many treasured memories. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, water skiing, camping and her all-time favorite, bargain shopping.
Marilyn will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Ray, who cherished their 42 years together; daughter Christie Allred-Killen and husband, John Floyd of San Jose; daughter Melanie Allred-Silva and husband, Misael, of Ventura; stepdaughter Diana Kohler and husband, Steve; grandchildren Karlee and Libbie Killen, Maikah Silva and Kit Kohler; brothers Bobby and Jack Schnabel; and sister Pauline Schnabel. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Wilbur Schnabel.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3501 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Friends may come for viewing prior to the service at 10 a.m. Burial following at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road , under the care of Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 805-643-9977.
