"Adam Hieb was born September 15, 1875 in Eureka, South Dakota to Jacob (b. 1833) and Klara (Schnabel) Hieb who were immigrants from Neudorf, South Russia. The Hieb family dated back to 1398. An ancestor named Hieb signed a property transaction in the Eberswalde District of Prussia. The Hiebs emigrated from Germany to the Black Sea area in Russia during 1812. Jacob and Klara Hieb and family immigrated to the States in May 1874 and settled in Dakota Territory near what would later be Eureka, S.D.
Adam Hieb was married to Amelia Giedd in Menno, South Dakota in 1905. Amelia was born February 24, 1880 in Odessa, Russia to Mr. and Marie (Hiebner) Giedd. Her mother Marie died in South Russia and Mr. Giedd brought his children to America and settled at Menno, South Dakota.
Shortly after their marriage, the newlyweds journeyed to Gregory County where they claimed a homestead near Herrick, South Dakota in the E 1/2 of section 21, Union Township which was half section (now Roy Zimmerman farm). Their children were born on the farm and when of school age attended the Glaser School District No. 37. Their neighbors included the families of Klundt, Trautman, Glasser, Abbenhaus, Ackerman, Bitterman, and several Indian families who owned land in that vicinity, one being the family of Charlie Owl.
Adam Hieb died January 7, 1936 and Amelia Giedd Hieb passed away January 15, 1945. They were the parents of eleven children: Martha married Clyde Gribble; five children - Wilfred, Edward, Nellie, Iona, and Freddie. Ida married John Kaiser (dec.); seven children - Alvin, Reinhold, Ida, Vera, Emil, Adam, and one son deceased. Widowed, Ida married a Mr. Rock. Alvina married Ed Kautz; two daughters - Leona (dec.) and Arlene. Pauline married Albert Guthmiller (dec.) and they had one son Albert Jr. Pauline married Chris Dewald. Mary married John Boettcher (dec.); three children - Delores, Berniece, and Calvin. Widowed, Mary married Carl Horst. William married Meryle Havens and they have two children - Kay and William Jr. Herman married Alma Fuhrman; three children - Lucille, Paul and Robert, deceased infant. Henry married Corine Didier; four children - Joann, James, Patricia, and Allen. Albert married Ruth Hockendorf; two sons - Steven and Allen. One daughter deceased as infant.
