GLENDIVE, MONTANA: Lorraine K. Bishop, age 77, went home to be with her Lord Jesus on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 24, 2009 in the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M on Friday, September 25, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive with Father Joseph Ponessa officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in Dawson Memorial Cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Lorraine was born on February 2, 1932 in Estevan, Saskatchewan to John and Elizabeth (Hockstein) Aspenlieder. She attended school in Torquary, Saskatchewan. As a young teen she moved with her family to Glendive and attended Dawson County High School.
She worked for the hospitals in Miles City and Glendive as a dietician aide for a short time, prior to meeting the love of her life, Donald J. Bishop. They were married April 15, 1950 in Glendive at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. To this union, fourteen children were born. Lorraine operated the Bishop Resale Shop for 23 years while raising her family. Over the years, her and her husband Donald, also operated the Western Cab, Western Union, Greyhound Bus Depot and the Montgomery Ward Store.
She retired in 1991.
Lorraine was a seamstress and sewed beautiful outfits for her many children. She was an accomplished artist and painted hundreds of brilliant landscapes. She was very fond of her hobby of puzzles and spent hours on end constructing them. She loved it so much she would time and challenge herself to complete them. Lorraine began her music career at the age of 60, teaching herself to play drums. She then became an accomplished bass guitarist and a member of the Cross Roads Band. They played a variety of venues, and one of her favorite was playing for the patients in the area nursing homes for several years.
Blessed to have shared in Lorraine's life was her husband of 60 years, Donald J. Bishop; her fourteen children, Larry Bishop of Glendive, Elaine (Robert) Harrison of Kenai, Alaska, Linda (Ron) Rykowski of Billings, Montana, Carolyn Stout of Hill City, South Dakota, Dale (Nancy) Bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota, Bryce Bishop of Rutland, Iowa, Sandra (Warren) Smetzer of Billings, Montana, Janit Bishop of Missoula, Montana, Sharon Bishop of Colstrip, Montana, Thomas (Lisa) Bishop of Anchorage, Alaska, Cheryle Bishop of Glendive, Randy Bishop of Glendive, Allen and Kathie (Shawn) Parent of Glendive. Lorraine was very proud of all her 35 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Edward (Choon) Aspenlieder of Lacey, Washington, Matt (Mary) Aspenlieder of Glendive, Lloyd (Shirley) Aspenlieder of Culbertson, Montana, Lawrence (Berdina) Aspenlieder of Kalispell, Montana and one sister, Viola Hanks of Mesa, Arizona. She will also be dearly missed by numerous nieces and nephews.
Lorraine was proceeded in death by her daughter, Sandra Smeltzer and her son, Allen Bishop; parents John and Elizabeth Aspenlieder, brother, Harvey Aspenlieder and half brother, Joseph Aspenlieder; sons-in-law, Raymond Taylor, Jeff Cozzens and Gary Brilz.
