Matt Aspenlieder Sr., age 83, of Glendive, Montana, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at his home in Glendive with his family by his side. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014 at the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. A Family and Friends Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014 at the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive with Reverend Brad Kelly officiating. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Glendive Assembly of God Church in Glendive with Pastor Brad Kelly officiating. Interment will be held in the Dawson County Cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Matt was born on October 2, 1930, to John and Elizabeth (Hochstein) Aspenlieder. He was the second of seven children. Matt grew up on the family farm near Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1948, his parents moved the family to Montana with intentions of purchasing a farm in Eastern Montana. However, the owner decided not to sell, so they made their home in Glendive, where Matt’s dad found work with the railroad. At the age of eighteen, Matt worked as a receiving clerk with Montgomery Ward. Matt then became a United States citizen. In 1950, he joined the United States Air Force and was deployed to Korea. Matt was honorably discharged in March of 1955.
On July 12, 1952, Matt and Mary (Bishop) were united in marriage. This has been a loving relationship for nearly sixty-two years, in which they were blessed with five children. In 1955, Matt began a nineteen-year career with Koch Furniture. Later, Matt and Mary worked together and managed Midwest Furniture, then purchased a New & Used Furniture store in Forsyth, Montana, before settling in Glendive and opening Matt’s New & Used. Matt also sold and repaired sewing machines, and he kept a journal in his office of each one he serviced for over fifty years.
In 1975, Matt and Mary became charter members of the Forsyth Assembly of God Church. Matt served as a church deacon in Forsyth and Glendive. His Christian faith was very important to him, and he dearly enjoyed memorizing Bible scripture. Matt was a man with high integrity, never cheating a customer, and was well known as a very honest man. Matt enjoyed working with the public for over sixty years and, at age seventy-five, found it difficult to retire after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Throughout Matt’s life his favorite sport was bowling. It was known, he would rather go bowling than eat! Matt enjoyed teaching his children, nieces, and nephews the love of bowling, and during special times throughout the year, Matt would arrange to lease a bowling alley for a day to spend with his wife and children.
Matt was dearly loved by his family and has been a great example of a man who was loyal to his beliefs, loving his wife and family, having faith in God, being patriotic, and assisting those in need.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Joseph and Harvey; sisters, Lorraine Bishop and Viola Hanks; and his daughter, Mischelle Anne Golie.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his sons, Matt, Jr. (Sandy), and Mike (Carla) of Gladstone, Miss., and Mark of Kirkland, Wash.; his daughter, MaryLee (Tom) Ames of Glendive; thirteen grandchildren, Jonathan, Brandell, L’auren, Brandon, Sonya, Melanie, Marie, Macy, Madison, Maya, Haley, Justin, and Kayla; and fifteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving are Matt’s brothers Edward (Choon) of Olympia, Wash., Lloyd (Shirley) of Culbertson, and Lawrence (Bardina) of Kalispell; and special brothers-in law and friends, William Bishop and Dennis Schock, Sr.
