- [S927] Obituary.
Lydia (Holzwarth) Heinrich spent her life giving to the needs of others. An always happy person, she loved to sing as she worked, prompting some people to call her "Liltin' Lydia."
Lydia and her husband William "Bill" Heinrich came to Mobridge in 1951 and she went to work caring for Mrs. Edna (Dan) Heupel, who was handicapped and in poor health. After caring for Edna for 25 years, Lydia kept busy caring for anyone who needed help, and driving friends and family to various appointments.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church from the time they moved to Mobridge. She served on every committee and office available and in 2000 was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award.
In 2002, she entered the Good Samaritan Center in Selby, where she continued to give help to residents and staff alike. "Whether we needed it or not," the staff would say with a chuckle.
Lydia is now at rest. She died Friday, July 17, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby at the age of 91 and surrounded by her family.
She was born Aug. 18, 1917, in Artas and grew up on the family farm in rural Mound City. She attended school until the seventh grade when she had to quit to help on the
farm.
On July 12, 1938, Lydia and Bill Heinrich were married. They made their home on a farm north of Java until 1950 when they moved to Lodi, Calif. In 1951 they moved to Mobridge.
Survivors are her daughter Norlene (Ted) Larson of Gillette, Wyo., her son Willis (Gladys) Heinrich of Belle Fourche; three granddaughters, Jennifer (Pete) Dunn of Corvallis, Mont., Kim Hopper (wife of the late Bradley Hopper) of Belle Fourche and Diana Shipley of Tracey, Calif.; two brothers, Raymond Holzwarth of Edina, Minn., and Ervin Holzwarth of Selby; 10 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Lydia was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 1987; granddaughter Lonna Shipley in 2005; sisters, Mathilda Brockel, Irene Lutz and Martha Aman; and three nieces.
Funeral services for Lydia were this morning, Wednesday, July 22, at the First Baptist Church in Mobridge with the Rev. Gary Street officiating. Casketbearers were Mark Holzwarth, Don Heinrich, Collin Brockel, Tyson Brockel, Bernie Huber and Steven Larson.
Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.
