Aberdeen - The service for Ivan Opp, 85, Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 21, 2008, at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Ivan died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m., Thursday with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Ivan Opp was born on June 28, 1922, to Simon & Marie (Wolff) Opp at Ventura, N.D. He attended country school. On Feb. 2, 1944, Ivan married LaRue Bender of Zeeland, N.D. There were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church of Venturia. They moved to a farm by Fredonia, N.D., and a year later they moved northeast of Westport, N.D. They were there a couple of years before moving to Nampa, Idaho, where they ran a grocery store. From there they moved to Lodi, Calif., where Ivan worked for General Mills. But farming was always on his mind and he knew there was no place like the Dakotas to raise a family so they moved back to a farm southeast of Britton, S.D. Ivan and LaRue farmed together for 30 years before they built a home and moved into Britton in 1978. He continued to farm with his son, Clayton until 1988 when he retired. In 1989, they moved to Aberdeen, S.D., due to health reasons. Ivan became a member of First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen. Ivan was a member of the United Methodist Church of Britton where he was a trustee and was always willing to help when needed. He was on the Britton Zoning Board and a member of Farmers Union. He loved to travel by car during the winter months. Ivan and LaRue also went on a European farm tour in 1976. Ivan's hobby was farming. In his free time Ivan enjoyed fishing and hunting during his younger years and told some great stories about some of those adventures. He was a member of a bowling league while in Britton and was an avid basketball fan. Grateful for having shared Ivan's life are his wife, LaRue Opp, Aberdeen; son, Roger (Linda) Opp, Gresham, Ore.; daughters, Sharon Sherburn, Prescott, Ariz., Cindy (Kervin) Olson, Amherst, S.D.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard Opp, Walter Opp; sisters, Freida Reile, Valinda Bender; one son, Clayton Opp; and granddaughter, Jeannette Koslowski. www.spitzer funeralhome.com
