Gustav ?Gust? Wanner, 93, Wishek, N.D., died Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at the Wishek Community Hospital, Wishek.
Mr. Wanner was born April 13, 1916, in McIntosh County, North Dakota, south of Wishek, the son of John and Maria (Koch) Wanner. He grew up in the region, receiving his elementary education in rural schools. He helped on the family farm. He married Leah Lingert on Oct. 3, 1939, southwest of Wishek. They moved to Minneapolis, where he worked at the Hotel Nicollet and Athletic Club. They moved to Vancouver, Wash., where he worked in the shipyards. They moved back to Wishek in 1944 and farmed for two years. They moved into Wishek, where he worked for Herr?s Store for eight years. He then worked for Sayler?s for 12 years, including the Sayler Lumber Yard. He became self-employed in 1972, working for area farmers and doing cement and carpentry work. His recollections of the early history of the Wishek area were included in videos. He was a member of St. Luke?s Lutheran Church, Wishek. He enjoyed attending flea markets, traveling, puzzles and history. He is survived by two daughters, Sally (John) Bitz, Bismarck, N.D., and Betty (Larry) Halvorson, Fargo, N.D.; a son, Leland (Sue), Dahinda, Ill.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, four brothers and five sisters.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Luke?s Lutheran Church, Wishek, with the Rev. Adam Roberts officiating.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Haut Funeral Chapel, Wishek.
Burial: St. Luke Lutheran Cemetery, Wishek, in the spring.
