Back row, left to right: Allan, Darlene, Wilma and Harry. Front row:
Herbert and Martha.
Herbert Mehlhaff was born to Jacob and Christina (Koerner) Mehlhaff. Herbert's
father, Jacob Mehlhaff, was born September 1861. He grew to manhood in the Menno
area as he and his parents, Heinrich Jakob Mehlhaff (known as Jakob) and
Elizabeth Koerner, had come to Dakota Territory from South Russia in 1874.
They farmed in Germany before they emigrated to South Russia then to America.
Herbert's mother, Christina Koerner, was born June 1866. In 1880, Christina
with her parents, Andreas Koerner and Elisabeth (Mehlhaff) Koerner, came to
America and settled in what is now Hutchinson County, South Dakota. On January
3, 1885 Jacob Mehlhaff married Christina Koerner and that same year followed the
settlers northward to where they homesteaded two and one-half miles south of
present Eureka. This farm is still operated by Mehlhaff ancestors. Jacob died
April 1934 and Christina died December 1955.
Herbert had two sisters and nine brothers: Jacob, John G., Albina, Edward,
Emil, Julius, Ida, William, Gotthilf, Otto and Arthur.
On September 30, 1930 Herbert married Martha Dockter, daughter of August and
Katherina (Stroh) Dockter of Venturia, North Dakota. Martha was born October 11,
1906.
Herbert and Martha purchased a farm three miles southeast of Eureka, which they
operated until 1962 when they moved into Eureka.
Four children were born to Herbert and Martha: Allen in 1931; Harry in 1936, he
and his family reside on the family farm; Wilma born 1938, married Donald Kaul;
and Darlene born February 16, 1942 and living in Delaware.
Martha died March 29, 1979 after a long fight with cancer. Herbert, a life long
resident of the Eureka area, is in good health and lives in his own home in
south Eureka.
