JACOB AND KAROLINA KOERNER 
 
        Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Koerner 
 
Jacob Koerner was born August 10, 1884 in the area of Freeman, South Dakota 
where his parents, Andreas and Emelia (Herman) Koerner, settled after 
emigrating to America from Kassel, South Russia in 1880. After living in the 
Freeman area for five years, they moved north and homesteaded in Odessa 
Township, sixteen miles northeast of Eureka. 
 
Brothers and sisters of Jacob were: Adolph, August, Henry, John, Daniel, 
Karolina (Mrs. Melchoir) Bonnett, Emelia Schanzenbach, Katherina (Mrs. Jacob) 
Schumacher, Bertha (Mrs. Henry) Hoff, Rosina Gilbraeth and Maggie Koerner. 
 
On January 22, 1907 Jacob married Karolina Knapp, born November 26, 1885, the 
daughter of Johann and Philibina Knapp, who also emigrated from Russia and 
homesteaded in Odessa Township. 
 
Brothers and sisters of Karolina were: John, Fred, Jacob, Christina Kundert 
Heyd, Paulina (Mrs. Fred) Mettler, Philibina (Mrs. Henry) Hoff, Magdelena (Mrs. 
John) Laemmle and Katherina (Mrs. John) Neuharth. 
 
Jacob and Karolina moved on the farm formerly owned by Philip Miller, close to 
the Koerner and Knapp farms. They lived there until their retirement in October 
1945 and then made their home in Eureka. 
 
Children born to Jacob and Karolina were Gustave (deceased) who married Martha 
Guthmiller and lived in Hosmer, South Dakota, Philippina (Mrs. Albert) 
Wittmayer, Annetta (Mrs. Julius) Ladner, Melinda (Mrs. Barney) Ladner, Allan 
who married Iona Mutschler, all of Eureka, and Edmund, Salt Lake City, Utah. 
 
Jacob Koerner died July 30, 1969, and Karolina Koerner died December 5, 1971.
