Elizabeth Schnabel was born on Friday, March 5, 1920 at Hitchcock, South Dakota to Jake and Mary (Tschetter) Walter. She was baptized at the Hutterthal Mennonite Church. She attended country school near Freeman through the 8th grade and graduated high school from Freeman Academy. She continued her education at Freeman Academy and earned her teaching certificate. Liz taught school for a time at Greenwood Colony, then attended Southern State College in Springfield where she earned her teaching degree. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Roland Schnabel on November 28, 1941 at Hartington, Nebraska. They farmed 2 ½ miles south of Tripp. Liz helped Roland on the farm and raised her children, then returned to teaching and taught school until she was 68 years old. They moved into Tripp in 1987. She was a member of the Frieden?s Ladies? Aid and a member of the Jelkin-Harms American Legion Post #142 Auxiliary. Liz enjoyed fishing and gardening and also enjoyed league bowling and tournaments. She and Roland loved to gather with their friends, go dancing and get together to play cards. Liz became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp on June 6, 2007, and it is there that she passed away on Friday, March 19, 2010, having attained the age of 90 years and 14 days.
Elizabeth is survived by two sons: Don (Paulette) Schnabel of Sun Lakes, Arizona and Jim Schnabel and special friend Cindy of Mitchell; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Rebecca (Sloane) Emden and Sophia of Arizona, Deon (Michael) Raibley and Trey and Savanna of Arizona, Suzanna (Kyle) Demitry and Connor of Japan, and Dustin (Liza) Schnabel of Sioux Falls; a brother, Carney (Betty) Walter of Sioux Falls; and four sisters: Marie Kiehlbaugh of Phoenix, Arizona, Berta (Paul) Elpert of Sioux Falls, Lily Rose (Ervin) Ortman of Portland, Oregon and Leona (Duane) Mogck of Scotland.
In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Schnabel; her daughter-in-law, Deb Schnabel; brother Max Walter and sister Clara Tiede.
