Barbara June Schnabel was born Tuesday, June 23, 1942, to Emil and Florence (Loudon) Klundt of Herrick, S.D. Her twin sister, Beatrice, was born on June 24, 1942. Barbara attended grade school at St. Charles, S.D., and graduated from Bonesteel High School in 1961. During her teens, she enjoyed baking and was active in 4-H throughout her school years and loved to go to dances.
She went to work in Chamberlain for Bell Telephone right after high school and later transferred to Winner.
Barbara was united in marriage to Dale Schnabel on April 5, 1964, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Herrick. They raised two children: Kimberly (July 19, 1965) and Nick (Aug. 16, 1971). The couple lived in many towns in South Dakota, but spent the majority of their married lives in Mitchell and Rapid City. Barbara worked at Allen's Restaurant in Mitchell, while maintaining the family's acreage south of Mitchell. She was always proud of her flowerbed there.
Dale was a journeyman plumber and often gone throughout the week, leaving Barbara to look after the family and a whole slew of pets including horses, chickens, rabbits, geese, dogs and cats. She especially liked what she found in her youngest child's pockets at the end of the day and was exceptional at neutralizing skunk scent on him.
Of the many good qualities that Barbara passed down to her children, her loyalty and commitment to her work was one of the strongest traits that she instilled in them. After a day of waiting tables and preparing the family dinner, she often helped Nick count the nightcrawlers he caught after dark to sell as bait.
In her early years, Barbara was a wonderful vegetable gardener and also enjoyed playing cards and going to drive-in movies. Before moving to Tripp, she spent the last 13 years managing a hotel in Rapid City. Throughout Barbara's years working with the public, she always enjoyed having a good cup of coffee and visiting with people.
Barbara passed away on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell after a battle with cancer.
Barbara's memory will be cherished by her husband, Dale Schnabel of Tripp; two children, Kimberly (Kelly) Gregg of Mitchell and Nick (Deanne) Schnabel of Bozeman; four grandchildren, Kirby Gregg and Kaitlin Gregg of Mitchell, and Savannah Schnabel and Quade Schnabel of Bozeman; three siblings: older sister Lorrayne (Ervin) Schroeder of Bonesteel, twin sister Beatrice Kierstead of Wood and younger brother Wayne "Butch" (Sandra) Klundt of Black Hawk.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents.
