Helena Handel Press & Dakotan MENNO - Helena K. Handel, age 84, of Menno, passed away at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Peace Christian Reformed Church, Menno, SD at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. Visitations will be at Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home in Menno, SD on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, from 1:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Handel, Justin Handel, Tyler Handel, Stean Maas, Daniel Mettler and Steven Mettler. Helena Katherina Mettler was born May 25, 1923, on a farm north of Menno, S.D. to Jacob F. and Magdalena (Mettler) Mettler. She was baptized by Rev. Betel and confirmed by Rev. Aaron Kurtz, in the Zion Reformed Church, north of Menno. She enjoyed her youth, growing up on the farm with her brothers and sisters. She graduated from Menno High School in 1943. She married Clifford J. Handel on September 15, 1946. They farmed east of Menno until 1981 when they moved to Menno and acquired Handel Insurance Agency. Helen always helped on the farm and in the office. She was a wonderful friend to her family and neighbors and was a faithful servant in her church and to many others. She found joy in gardening. Helen is survived by her husband of 61 years, Clifford; one daughter, Katherine Handel (Lynn Pennington) of Paoli, OK; two sons: Bruce (Mary) Handel of Menno, SD and John (JoLynn) Handel of Sioux City, IA; Grandchildren: Deaun Maas Steed, Major Stean (Raissa) Maas, Jeremy (Denise) Handel, Justin (Joanie) Handel, Hayden, Holten and Halena Handel; Great-grandchildren are: Tyler, Avery and Grant Handel, Austin and Hailey Handel, and Jaeyla Maas Steed. Helen is also survived by her sister, Cecilia Huenemann and four brothers: Ray (Velma) Mettler, Calvin (Carol) Mettler, Gerold Mettler,and Gordon (Pat) Mettler, all of Menno, SD, as well as, many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Erna Tueting and Elsie Herrboldt, and two young siblings, Richard and Hildegard.
