Eureka, SD-Funeral service for Emilia Mehlhaff, 90 of Eureka will be 10:30am Monday, October 19, 2015 at Eureka Reformed Church. The Rev. James Grossmann will officiate.
Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery at Hosmer, SD.
Honoring Emilia’s wishes, a closed casket visitation will be Sunday from 5-7pm with a prayer service at 7pm at the funeral home.
Emilia died Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Avera Eureka Health Care Center.
Emilia Schnabel, daughter of Gottfried and Lydia (Maisch) Schnabel was born January 6, 1925 on the family farm near Eureka. She attended country school and helped on the family farm and had many babysitting duties for neighboring families. She was united in marriage to Norman Mehlhaff on October 26, 1947 at the Hoffnungstahl Congregational Church 15 miles northeast of Eureka. They moved to Norman’s family farm 5 miles northwest of Hosmer. Together they had four daughters and one son. Norman passed away April 9, 1999. She and her son, LeRoy remained on the farm until they moved to Eureka in 2011. LeRoy passed away August 29, 2012.
Emilia enjoyed singing, visiting with family and friends, baking, delighting her family with her fine jam and embroidery. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy. The memories of her love and devotion to her family, her meek and humble spirit and of her faith in the Lord will be cherished by all those who knew her. She was a member of the Eureka Reformed Church.
Grateful for having shared her life are her four daughters, Mavis (Dwight) Lehr of Roscoe, Bonnie (Steve) Mattson of Lisbon, ND, Judy Sykes of Burbank, SD, and Norma (Kenneth) Kilber of Ipswich; four sisters and two brothers, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son, parents, four brothers, one sister, and two sons-in-law.
Casketbearers will be Emilia’s grandchildren, Michael Lehr, Andrew Lehr, Matthew Opp, Allison Kossick, Meredith Olson, MaKayla Kilber, and Dylan Sykes.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
