Schnabel, 86, of Eureka will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at St. Pauls United Church of Christ in Eureka. Pastor Lucinda Haak and Rev. Dianne Rood-Kiesz will officiate.Burial will be in Eureka City Cemetery.Visitation will be Monday from 3-7 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm at the funeral home.Johnnie died Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Avera Eureka Health Care Center.Johnnie, son of Gottfried and Lydia (Maisch) Schnabel was born May 1, 1928 at Eureka. He grew up on the family homestead farm at New Town, SD. He attended country school and worked on the family farm.He was united in marriage to Violet Frances Moser on September 26, 1948 in Hoffnungsfeldt Congregational Church, rural Eureka. In 1947 he purchased the New Town Store and operated it until 1952. Johnnie and Violet purchased a farm two miles south of New Town where they were general farmers raising small grains, livestock and dairy. His wife Violet, died October 23, 1993. In 1994 he moved into Eureka. He continued to help his son on the farm for many years.He was united in marriage to Delores Bertsch on September 30, 2001 in Eureka Baptist Church. Johnnie entered assisted living in November of 2010 and Avera Eureka Health Care Center on July 31, 2012.Johnnie enjoyed polka music, watching cattle sales on television and especially spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Pauls United Church of Christ.Johnnie is survived by his children, Susan (Mark) Holzwarth of Mound City and Larry (Judy) Schnabel of Eureka; siblings, Frieda Feiock of Lodi, CA, Emilia Mehlhaff of Eureka, Marvin (Doris) Schnabel of Lodi, CA, Lorine Guthmiller of Belle Plains, MN, Eleanor (Elmer) Nies of Roseville, MN, Darlene (Al-Nathan) Nies of Little Canada, MN and Jim (Krista) Schnabel of Eau Claire, WI; four grandchildren, Kristie Wyly, Tom Schnabel, Jessica Jahraus and Lisa Ochsner and nine great-grandchildren, James and Hunter Wyly, Peyton, Mallory and Danyelle Schnabel, Ellie, Jeremiah and Isaiah Jahraus and Levi Ochsner.He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Violet, three brothers, Milbert, Allen and Martin and one sister, Irene Herman.Honorary Casketbearers will be Johnnies granddaughters and great-grandchildren.Casketbearers will be Tom Schnabel, Dustin Jahraus, Tyler Ochsner, Stanley Schnabel, Elmo Herman and Tom Guthmiller.Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
