NEPONSET - John M. Thurwanger, 61, of Neponset, died at 5:49 a.m., Friday, December 11, 2015 in the emergency room at OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 16 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. Rev. Terry Lancaster will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 15 at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following the service and private inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Buda-Neponset Rescue Unit, American Diabetes Association or to the American Heart Association.
He was born October 3, 1954 in Kewanee, the son of Frederick and Catherine Frances (Wolfe) Thurwanger. He married Sheila Smith on June 12, 1976 in Sheffield. She survives of Neponset, as do two daughters, Amber Thurwanger and fiancé, Adam Wallace of Arlington Heights, IL and Regina (Jeremy) Trill of Kewanee, his grandson, Tucker Trill of Kewanee, two brothers, Bill Thurwanger of Hot Springs, AR and Tom (Linda) Thurwanger of Florida, eight sisters, Joyce (Larry) Young of Everton, AR, Carole Moats of Kewanee, Mary Bell of Peoria, AZ, Mary (Allan) Warrick of Carrollton, TX, Pat Bent of Kewanee, Edie (Gene) Graham of Hot Springs, AR, Theresa Pistole of Dallas, TX and Yvonne (Jim) Decker of Carrollton, TX and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in infancy, a brother and sister-in-law, Joe (Linda) Thurwanger and two sisters, Constance DeRycke and Rita Sulaski.
John graduated from Kewanee High School in 1973. He worked for Sears Roebuck for 26 years and currently worked for the Dept. of Homeland Security as TSA at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. He was a member of the Neponset Fire Dept. and the Buda-Neponset Rescue Unit and a former member of the Jaycees and the Neponset Village Board. He was a craftsman and enjoyed building things and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
