JULIUS AND ERNA DOERR
Julius Doerr was born 15 miles northeast of Eureka to Fred and Katherina (Job)
Doerr. His grandparents were Rudolph and Carolyn (Koerner) Doerr who had
immigrated to the United States from Kassel, South Russia, and Ludwig and Rosina
(Kranzler) Job who had immigrated from Neudorf Russia. On September 19, 1967,
Julius' mother married Jacob Wolff. Julius has one sister, Hilda (Mrs.
Reinhold) Mettler at Upham, North Dakota, and one brother, Raymond, Lodi,
California.
Julius and Erna Doerr
On June 15, 1941, Julius married Erna Schmitt, daughter of Edward and Rosina
(Weisz) Schmitt. Erna was born and raised three miles west of Long Lake, South
Dakota. Her grandparents were Johann and Friedricha (Lammle) Schmitt who
immigrated to the United States from Gluckstal, South Russia and Philiph and
Carolina (Schumacher) Weisz who immigrated from Bergdorf, South Russia. Erna
has one brother, Floyd, who is presently living on the farm homesteaded by her
grandparents in 1892.
The first years of farming saw no electricity or running water or oil heat, but
as time went on, they enjoyed these conveniences. Julius and Erna rented a farm
18 miles east of Eureka. Their first car was a Model A Ford.
In 1951 they purchased a farm 18 miles east and 2 1/2 miles north of Eureka.
Like everyone else, they had their share of ups and downs, but what stands out
in Erna's mind is the ice storm of December, 1966. The power and telephone
lines snapped, it was impossible to travel and they were without power for
eight days. The only heat was a three-burner kerosene stove. In March of 1966,
there was a three-day blizzard where many farmers lost much livestock. This was
the worst storm in their lifetime.
Julius and Erna farmed 34 years. In 1975 they sold their farm and moved to
Aberdeen in 1976. They are members of the Good Shepherd Church. Erna worked two
years for Mohr Fencing and presently works part-time at Tru-Fit assembling
trophies.
Julius and Erna have two children, Dianna and Duane. Dianna, born in 1942, is a
beautician employed at Adoraccion Coiffures.
Duane, married to Virginia Opp, was born in 1944. He is employed at Old Home
Bread, and Virginia teaches second grade at Tiffany. They live in Aberdeen and
have two children, Kirsten and Ryan.
