Birth: Jun. 2, 1924 South Dakota, USA Death: Oct. 30, 2013 Aberdeen Brown County South Dakota, USA The funeral service for Velma Esther Doerr, 89, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street, with Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Burial will be at 9:00 a.m. Monday, November 4, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Velma died Wednesday, October 30 at Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home. Velma Esther Burrer was born June 2, 1924 to Jacob and Leah (Preszler) Burrer 18 miles northeast of Eureka, SD. Following graduation from Eureka High School, Velma attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. She taught school in the Eureka area. On June 25, 1944 Velma married Raymond Doerr at Hoffenugsfeld Congregational Country Church in Eureka. They made their home in Eureka where Velma worked at the grocery stores until they moved to Lodi, CA in 1961. She worked for 22 years at St. Joseph Hospital in Stockton, CA in Central Service until retirement. They moved to Loveland, CO in 1991 to be closer to family. Raymond passed away in December of 2005. Velma resided in Loveland until 2006 when she moved to Davis Court in Aberdeen. Velma loved socializing with everyone at Davis Court. She liked cooking for family, quilting, crocheting, and most of all enjoyed her grandsons and great granddaughters. Velma was a member of the First Congregational Church in Loveland, CO and more recently attended Plymouth Congregational UCC in Aberdeen. She was a past president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 22 in Eureka. She recently received her five year award with RSVP. Grateful for having shared Velma's life are her son, Dennis Doerr, two grandsons; three great granddaughters; and two sisters; Mabel Jacob and Virginia Rohrbach. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Leah Burrer, husband, Raymond Doerr, and her brothers; Harry Burrer, Elmer Burrer, and Del Burrer.
