- [S927] Obituary.
Delmer J. Bender "D.J." January 27, 1918 - December 14, 2012 Delmer has been called home to the Lord. He came into this world as the seventh son of ten boys to Fredrick and Christina Bender of Menno, South Dakota. Delmer grew up on a farm learning self-reliance, confidence, and the rewards of a good work ethic. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a naval pilot in the Pacific Theater. His naval career included being on the first naval ship to enter Pearl Harbor after the December 7th bombing and participating in the search for the first naval planes that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. Subsequent to his naval service, Delmer began a successful career as an insurance agent before retiring to enjoy travel, family, reading, and volunteer work. His service as a volunteer included Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement, and St. Luke's Anglican Church. Delmer was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; and is survived by his sons, Dale and Joanne Bender, Douglas and Claudia Bender, and Paul and Gina Bender; and his grandchildren, Jonathan, Jarrod, Lauren, Matthew, and Jacob. While he was with us, he enjoyed sharing his time with two dachshunds, Mij and Libby, and lunches with friends at Narducci's, Olive Garden, and Marie Callender's, where he was lovingly known as "Sam," including Sunday brunches, which were the highlights of his weekly activities, in addition to his avid reading on his Nook. The family extends their appreciation to the folks at Lifehouse on 34th Street for their wonderful care and loving attention. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to your favorite charity . A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 21, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 2730 Mall View Rd. For condolences please visit www.greenlawnmortuaryandcemetery.com.
