Funeral services were held at 2:30 yesterday afternoon for Mrs. Myrtle Pierce, who died early Wednesday morning at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., after an illness lasting only about a week. Mrs. Pierce underwent two operations for a sinus infection there within a week after returning from Jacksonville, Fla., where she had been visiting with her sister, from which she failed to rally, meningitis having also developed in the meantime. The body was brought home Wednesday night and the funeral services were held in the home of her sister, Mrs. Ollie Hammersley, the Rev. E.H. O'Rear of Charleston, Mo., conducting them.
Mrs. Pierce, whose full name was Josephine Myrtle Powell Pierce, was born at Hathaway, Tenn., November 17, 1878, the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Cole Powell. The family moved to this city when she was a small girl, and made her home here continuously since that time. On Jan. 14, 1899, she was married to the late N.N. Pierce, from whom she was later separated, and for the past several years has been the manager of the Carleton Hotel. She became a member of the Methodist church when 13 years of age; and remained a faithful member ever since.
She is survived by three sisters Mrs. S.J. Corbett and Mrs. Ollie Hammersley, both of this city, and Mrs. Louis Morefield of Jacksonville, Fla., who with Mr. Morefield was present for the funeral. She is also survived by four half-sisters and two half brothers, who are, Mrs. O.A. Tilman of this city, Mrs. Freeman Sorrell of Bloomfield, Mo.; Mrs. J.I. Lindenthaler of Jacksonville, Fla., Miss Marie Powell, Jacksonville, and Oliver and T.C. Powell, also of Jacksonville.
Mrs. Pierces death was so sudden and unexpected that the entire community was shocked by it. Many expressions of regret and of sympathy for surviving relatives are heard and with these The Democrat-Argus joins in extending condolence to those relatives who have sustained so sudden and so severe a loss.
