HERBERT HEUPEL FAMILY Herbert Heupel family Herbert, Lillian, Gwen, and Nancy Heupel moved to Eureka from Cresbard, South Dakota, in August 1962. At this time, Mr. Heupel joined the Eureka Faculty as Industrial Arts and Junior High Social Studies Teacher. Herbert Heupel, son of Simon and Magdalena (Bertsch) Heupel, was born in McPherson County on February 12, 1925. He married Lillian June Haas on June 29, 1950, at Venturia, North Dakota. He attended Ashley High School, was in the Army during World War II, and was stationed in Italy when the war ended. He attended Northern State College and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Dakota, Ellendale Branch, and also did some graduate work at Northern State College. Mr. Heupel taught country school for six years, then seven years at Cresbard High, and twenty-three years in the Eureka School system. He retired from teaching in 1984, and operates his own custom harvest business during the summer months. Lillian June (Haas) Heupel, daughter of Adolph and Katherina (Kiesz) Haas, was born June 18, 1927, at Venturia, North Dakota. She is a graduate of Ashley High School, attended the University of North Dakota, Ellendale Branch, and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Northern State College, and has done some graduate work at Northern State College. She taught school in North Dakota, Cresbard and Eureka; and in 1984, she retired from teaching. Mr. and Mrs. Heupel are active members of the First Baptist Church in Eureka. Since retirement, they are enjoying more leisure time, traveling, and Arizona during the winter months. Gwendolyn Kay (Heupel) Englund was born April 18, 1954, in Eureka. She attended grade school in Cresbard and Eureka, graduating from Eureka High in 1972. She attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, where she received her degree in Nursing. Gwen married Brad Englund in Eureka on August 6, 1976. She, with her husband Brad, and three children, Sarah Elizabeth (six), Michael Bradley (four), and Rebecca Kay (two) reside in Coon Rapids, a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nancy Lee (Heupel) Matson was born August 6, 1955, in Eureka. She attended grade school in Cresbard and Eureka, graduating from Eureka High in 1973. Nancy attended South Dakota State University and Northern State College. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Northern State College in 1977, and is an elementary teacher in Sioux Falls. Nancy married Larry Matson in Eureka on July 21, 1979. She, with her husband Larry, and her two daughters, Kelli Jo (four) and Jessi Lyn (one) reside in Sioux Falls. Mark Herbert Heupel was born November 2, 1962, in Aberdeen. He attended grade school and high school in Eureka and graduated in 1981. Mark attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1985. Mark is employed in Seattle, Washington, as an engineer with the Environmental Control Design organization of the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company.
