Harold Heupel, son of Christina (Knodel) and Fred Heupel, was born December 28, 1919, northeast of Eureka in McPherson County. The family lived on farmsteads near Lehr, North Dakota, Ashley, North Dakota, Long Lake, South Dakota, and in 1943 moved to Eureka.
Harold married Meda Meidinger on July 17, 1949, at the Ashley Reformed Church. Prior to going into farming, Harold held many jobs including helping at Mehlhaff Mortuary, being in partnership with Val Kary in a Standard Station (across from the current Ken's Food Fair), and owning the Luncheonette with his twin brother, Arnold.
Harold had lots of stories of escapades with his identical twin and the trouble they got into, such as the boat they and their friends built on which they sold rides on area lakes for 25 cents but grossed the most from the case of Canadian Club they stowed behind the knee wall and smuggled across the border; or painting someone's goat with green and white stripes; or surprising newlyweds by assembling a plow on their barn roof; and his favorite about hunting grouse slightly out of season with renowned former Eureka lawyer Paul Kretschmar and then stowing the birds in the hotel furnace when they discovered a game warden was staying in the same Pierre hotel, as the temperature dropped and the furnace was lit. Harold could never again eat anything spiced with sage due to the smell emanating through the hotel heating system.
Harold bought what became the family farm southwest of Eureka in 1953 on which he raised small grains but primarily ran a feed lot for butcher cattle. In 1974, his son, Dennis joined his father in the cattle business which continues to produce Heupel Beef. Harold retired from active farming in 2000 and, in 2009, he and Meda moved to the Healthcare Ceneter. His hobbies included playing cards, fishing and traveling. He took great pride in his butcher cattle and, after retiring, was vey proud of the potatoes he grew in his minie-garden.
Family surviving Harold include Meda, his wife of 62 years; one son Dennis (Mick) Heupel of Eureka; two daughters - Susan Price of Edina, Minnesota, and Jane Heupel of Naples, Florida; one brother, Alden (Marcia) Heupel of Madison, Wisconsin; and two grandsons, Matthew and Jared Heupel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Harold was preceded in death by his faher on December 16, 1941, his mother on January 01, 1956, three sisters, Erna Heupel, Freda Larson and Irene Stotz; and his twin brother, Arnold.
