FRED J. AND BERTHA JOB Fred and Bertha Job Fred Job was born March 20, 1894 to Johan and Carolina Job in McPherson County. He spent his youth on his parent's farm southeast of Eureka and went to college at Redfield. He served in the U. S. Army during World War I, returning to Eureka after the war where he and August Harr went into partnership operating the Chrysler Garage, located at the present site of the Lyric Lanes. On December 23, 1923 he married Bertha Schumacher, daughter of Fred and Barbara Schumacher in Eureka. They had six children, five surviving. Milton, married to Hazel Job, lives in Eureka; Esther (Mrs. David) Huft, lives in Pierre, Marion Touchstone resides at South Gate, California; Fred, married to Barbara King, employed by Hughes Electronics, presently lives in Belgium; Gloria Shangreaux resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. Due to the depression in the 30's it was necessary to sell the business. Fred then worked for William Wenzel as a mechanic in the Dodge and Plymouth garage. He later operated the county road maintainer and then was employed by Bareither Electric. Fred and Bertha also operated a small grocery store called Lakeside Grocery, located by the lake near their home. While in Eureka, Fred was a member of the American Legion and also served the Congregational Church as Sunday School teacher, deacon and choir director. In 1951, Fred and Pauline moved to Pierre where Fred was employed in the laboratory of the State Highway Department until his retirement. Bertha died in 1962. Fred later remarried and moved to California where he died March 7, 1984.
