- [S927] Obituary.
Born to Martha and Albert Meidinger on March 6, 1929, on a farm near Eureka, S.D., Marie Meidinger came into the world so tiny she could fit in a shoebox. She was a fighter and survived to live until Sept. 9, 2016, when she joined her heavenly family.
Marie was the third of eight children and was the first child to graduate from high school. Mom described herself as a precocious child and when asked to give an example, she shared that she told her sister Florence that because Florence drank from a green glass she would die because green was poisonous. Florence then laid on the sofa waiting. Mom also taught herself to read by hiding under her bed reading the hired girls’ romance magazines. She also told me about the time when she was about four and went to the circus with her family. She was very small and her hair was almost white and when she passed the fortune teller’s tent, both were very intrigued with each other. A short time later Mom was missing and when her parents retraced their steps they found her by the fortune teller’s tent, which was being quickly packed up to leave.
Marie married the love of her life, Jack Job, on Feb. 20, 1949, and they were together for 61 years. They started married life in Aberdeen, S.D., and then moved to Mobridge, S.D., where they lived for 35 years. They moved briefly to Williston, N.D., but returned to South Dakota, residing in Pierre for over 18 years before moving to Billings to be closer to family.
Marie’s work life was varied and she worked as a secretary, cashier, travel agent and hospital receptionist/operator at St. Mary’s in Pierre, a position she held for 18 years.
Marie loved music and was a gifted soprano. She sang in church and community choirs for over 35 years. She also loved traveling and was able to take trips to Spain, Mexico, Hawaii and Greece with Jack, Europe with her son, Robert, and to Ireland with a choir. She also loved playing bridge and dancing. When Lawrence Welk came on the TV she would dance around the living room, often grabbing one of the kids as a partner. She was a lifelong learner (except technology!) and was an avid reader.
Marie was active in hospital and church auxiliaries while in South Dakota and Women of Mayflower after moving to Billings.
She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sons, Allan and Anthony; her husband, Jack; one brother and two sisters. She is survived by her children Thomas (Carol), Susan Anderson (Duane), Robert (Joane); seven grandchildren, Kristen, Jessica, Scott, Christopher, Lorna, Nicole and Teresa; four great-grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.
We thank all the people who sent cards, flowers and visited Mom in her final days.
A celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m., Oct. 10, at Mayflower Congregational UCC, 2940 Poly Dr. Memorials may be given to Mayflower Congregational UCC or RiverStone Hospice.
Arrangements are by Cremation & Funeral Gallery. Condolences can be sent through www.cfgbillings.com through “Our Families.”
