AUGUST AND MARY BENDER A promising young farmer, August Bender met his future bride, Mary Lapp, at a June 1913 mutual friend's wedding. Although they lived in the same vicinity, their paths had never crossed before. A little more than a year later, on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1914, they were married in the Calvin Reformed Church located three miles from the Bender farm. It was a triple wedding ceremony, performed by Rev. Gust Zenk of Eureka, including two of August's sisters and one of Mary's brothers. They were John Lapp and Emma Bender and John Mehlhoff and Lydia Bender. August Bender, one of twelve children, was born May 28, 1889, rural Eureka, to Jacob Bender and Christina (Martel) Bender. To help out with some of the farm and house work, August's sister, Magdalena, and brother, Albert, lived with them for several years. Two children were born to them on the farm. On November 29, 1915 the first daughter, Florence, was born. Four years later, on November 11, 1919, daughter Verona joined the family. Mutual Insurance Company for 34 years, also an adjuster and served as their president for 29 years.
