ALBERT J. AND FRIEDA C. BENDER Albert J. and Frieda C. Bender Albert J. Bender was born January 13, 1902 in Stickel Township to Jacob and Christina (Martel) Bender. Jacob Bender, born January 13, 1859 and Christina (Martel) Bender, born September 12, 1861, came to America in 1884 from Kassel, Russia and settled on a farm ten miles southeast of Eureka. Jacob died on September 16, 1906 and Christina in August 1944. Albert attended school in Stickel Township. He lived on the home farm till 1924. For the next two years he was employed at a packing house in Sioux City, Iowa during the winter months and farmed his land during the summer. In 1926 he started to work for Northwestern Public Service. Albert was one of twelve children; Christina Preszler, John Bender, Kathrina Dittus, Rose Windmiller, August Bender, Lydia Mehlhaff, Emma Lapp, Julius Bender, Magdalena Lapp, Albert Bender, Emil Bender and Hertha Werre. On July 12, 1930 Albert J. Bender and Frieda C. Heiser of Avoca, Minnesota were united in marriage by her father, Rev. Robert Heiser. Frieda was born at Expansion, North Dakota to Robert W. Heiser, and Amelia (Scheid) Heiser. Robert W. Heiser was born at Bremerhaven, Germany on June 17, 1877 and Amelia (Scheid) Heiser was born at South Creamea, Russia on November 30, 1885. Frieda's parents came to Eureka in 1914 and her father, a Lutheran pastor, served Hoffnungstal, Friedenstal, Artas, Herreid and Pollock Lutheran Churches until January 1923. Her father died May 18, 1934 and her mother died December 20, 1958. Frieda graduated from high school at Watertown, Wisconsin and attended a short term at Northern at Aberdeen, South Dakota. She taught rural school in Campbell County. Frieda was one of ten children. After their marriage Albert continued to work for the Highline till 1932, then they moved to Eureka and he worked for his brother, Julius at the Creamery. In 1933 they moved to his farm. While on the farm Albert worked at Leola for the Agricultural Conservation Association for three years. In November 1943 Albert had a farm sale and bought a hardware store. Albert and Frieda operated the Eureka Hardware for twenty-five years. Three children were born to Albert and Frieda. Stanley Robert Bender was born March 20, 1933 at Eureka, married Virginia Tillman of Lakeland, Florida. Their children are Robert G. Bender, Brian A. Bender, Christopher L. Bender and Melanie D. Bender. They were divorced in 1969. Stanley married Elizabeth Trickay, Paramus, New Jersey, December 9, 1972. Sylvia Dale Bender born July 3, 1939 at Eureka, died July 5, 1939. Ronald Dale Bender born April 3, 1943 at Eureka, married Teri Decker of Yankton, South Dakota. Their children are Stephanie L. Bender and Matthew D. Bender. They were divorced in 1982. Ronald married Muriel Shepard on September 28, 1985 at Rapid City, South Dakota. Albert served on the school board in the country for nine years and also nine years in town. He was active in Boy Scouts, president of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Country Club, member of the Isaak Walton League, Sportsman Club, council member of Zion Lutheran Church for six years, mayor of Eureka for two terms from 1958 to 1962 and president, director and manager of the local Senior Citizen Center. Frieda was a member of the Ladies Aid and is a charter member of the ALCW, the Hospital Auxiliary, PTA, Business and Professional Women, and a member of Zion Lutheran Church choir for many years. She taught Sunday School and Bible School for 22 years, joined the Garden Club after retiring and is active at the Senior Citizen Center. The church affiliation for the Bender family is Zion Lutheran at Eureka.

Funeral services for Albert J Bender, 89, retired hardware store owner of Eureka, will be held Thursday, September 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka with the Reverend Marvin Ketterling officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Eureka under the direction of Straub's Funeral Home.
He died September 22, 1991, at the Bowdle Hospital.
Albert J Bender was born January 13, 1902, at Eureka to Jacob and Christina (Martel) Bender. He lived on a farm southeast of Eureka. He married Frieda C Heiser July 12, 1930, Avoca, Minnesota. He moved to Eureka in 1932. He worked at McPherson County Agricultural Conservation oofice for three years. In 1943 he purchased the Eureka Hardware Store and operated it for 25 years. He was city mayor from 1958 to 1962 and president and director of the Senior Citizens of Eureka.
He became a resident of the Bowdle Nursing Home in January 1991. His wife died February 20, 1991.
Survivors include Stanley R Bender of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Ronald D Bender of Rapid City; two sisters, Magdalena Lapp of Eureka and Hertha Werre of Yakima, Washington; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one daughter, one grandchild, five sisters and four brothers.
Organist will be Mrs. Arnold Lapp and there will be congregational singing.
