IDA HEUPEL BERTSCH Eunice, Julius, Royal and Ida Heupel Julius Heupel, son of John Heupel and Katherina Heupel (Weisser) was born on April 3, 1904 in Petersburg Township. He attended school and grew to manhood in this area. He had eight brothers and three sisters. The brothers were: Fred, Jacob, John, Simon, August, Christ, Emil and Edward. The three sisters were: Christina Heupel (Nies), Katherina Heupel (Loebs) and Martha Heupel (Hoff). Julius Heupel married Ida Guthmiller on July 22, 1929. Ida Guthmiller was the daughter of John Guthmiller and Christina Guthmiller (nee Stein). Ida had two brothers and five sisters. The brothers were: Emil and Arthur Guthmiller. The sisters were: Katherina, Mrs. Fred Spitzer; Christina, Mrs. John Schumack; Emma, Mrs. Gottlieb Sayler; Bertha, Mrs. Jacob Neuharth and Leah, Mrs. Otto Heupel. Edwin and Ida Bertsch Julius and Ida Heupel established a farm in section 28 of Petersburg Township and lived on this farm for 23 years. They had two children, Royal and Eunice. Royal was born November 26, 1929 and married Marcella Bender on June 15, 1952. Royal and Marcella Heupel had three children: Debra, Craig and Ross. Debra was born January 30, 1953 and married Duane Brudvig on April 28, 1972. Duane and Debra Brudvig have two girls: Stacy Marie and Melissa Lynn. Craig Heupel was born May 15, 1955 and married Pamela Blilie on January 18, 1974. Craig and Pam have a set of triplets born July 18, 1978. Their names are: Chip James, Carla Ann and Cit Kenneth. Ross Heupel was born December 26, 1956 and is married to Cheryl Ziegler. They presently reside at Sioux Falls and he works for Representative Tom Daschle. Eunice Heupel was born June 20, 1933. Refer to Howard Mettler history. Julius and Ida farmed until 1953. Julius became ill and required surgery at the Eureka Hospital. He died September 27, 1953 at age 49. He is buried at the Eureka Cemetery. Farming became an impossible task for Ida and she had an auction sale and moved to Eureka. Ida purchased a house in the Herreid area and had it moved to Eureka. She still resides in this home. Ida Heupel married Edwin K. Bertsch on March 20, 1958. Edwin was born August 22, 1915, the son of Karl Bertsch and Mathilda Pleinis Bertsch. Edwin had three brothers: Adolph, Reinhold and Herbert and one sister: Martha (Mrs. Edward Schauer). Edwin served in the Army during World War II, and then farmed in Detmold Township until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion and belonged to the Eureka Baptist Church. Edwin was a great lover of music. He sang with the Baptist Men's Quartet. Edwin died at the Eureka Hospital on November 1, 1981. He is buried at the Johnannesthal Baptist Cemetery. Ida has kept busy all her life. She worked at various business places in Eureka. She worked at the Leland Hotel, Bertsch Grocery Store, Boschee Store and the Coast to Coast. She was also a Stanley Dealer for 25 years. Ida belongs to the American Legion Auxiliary, Eureka Hospital Auxiliary and the Baptist Ladies Aid. Ida's hobby is sewing quilts.
