Eureka: Anna K. Mettler, 94, Eureka, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the Eureka Reformed Church with the Rev. Richard Stetler leading the service. Organist will be Julie Bentz and soloist will be Charles Koerner.
Visitation will be at the Lien- Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with family present from 5-7 p.m.
Anna K. Opp, daughter of Lydia (Hoff) and Fred D. Opp, was born Aug. 9, 1917, at her parent's farm 15 miles N.E. of Eureka. She was raised on the farm and attended Odessa TWSHP Rural School. Following her schooling, she stayed on the farm and worked as a hired girl for neighboring families.
Anna married Reuben Mettler at the Reformed Church N.E. of Eureka on Sept. 12, 1937. They lived on various farms until settling on a farm they purchased 22 miles N.E. of town. In 1979, they moved into Eureka. Reuben died Feb. 19, 2004. Anna lived the rest of her life in Eureka, having moved to the Healthcare Center last month.
Anna had the gift of playing the organ ?by ear? and played at the country Reformed Church for many years. She loved working on the farm, was a very good cook, and enjoyed embroidering and gardening. She especially cherished the time she spent with her family.
Mrs. Mettler is survived by one son, Larry Mettler of Eureka; one daughter, Phyllis (Leland) Lutz of Watertown; one brother, Ervin (LaVern) Opp of Eureka; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Mettler, of Mobridge.
She was preceded in death by her father on Jan. 5, 1975, her mother on Oct. 17, 1975, her husband, one son, Bruce, on Oct. 22, 2011, three brothers, Reinhold, Arthur and Herbert, and one sister, Ella Schnabel.
Casketbearers will be Todd Hieb, Wilbert Schnabel and Mike Mettler of Eureka, Jordan Gauer of Aberdeen, Chuck Mettler of Watertown and Jerry Mettler of Canton.
