THEODORE TESKE
Theodore Teske Lydia Teske
Theodore Frederick Teske came to Eureka as a small child from Hague, North
Dakota, where he was born on September 28, 1904. His parents, Jacob and Lousia
(nee Pfeiffer), were both born in Bergdorf, Russia. Theodore's father, Jacob,
worked as a railroad laborer for the Chicago Milwaukee, until 1907, when he
became the railroad section foreman at Eureka.
As a young boy of thirteen, Theodore began working for the railroad as a
laborer, with his father, Jacob. His brothers, Jacob Jr., Edward and Arthur,
also were employed by the railroad during their lifetime.
On March 2, 1930, Theodore married Lydia Rieker. Lydia (nee Rieker) was born in
Bergdorf, Russia on October 6, 1912. Her parents, John and Rosina (nee Wolff),
came to the United States when Lydia was about two years old, by way of
Germany, where they had lived for about three years. The Riekers lived and
worked with the John Wittmayer family for several years. After living at
several other farms, they moved to Hillsview.
Here the young Lydia met Theodore, who was already the railroad section foreman
there. He was a boarder at the Rieker home until a railroad bunkhouse was
erected. He still took his meals with the Riekers, while courting Lydia. After
their marriage, the young couple lived in Hillsview until 1936, when they moved
to Eureka. Here Theodore became the railroad section foreman at the retirement
of his father, Jacob.
There were three daughters born to this union. All three were born in Hillsview
before the move to Eureka. Darlene, born on March 30, 1931, is married to
Harley Neuharth and they live on a farm ten and one-half miles northeast of
Eureka. They are the parents of six children; three boys and three girls.
Mavis, born on April 21, 1932, is married to Robert Jung and they reside in
Arvada, Colorado. They are the parents of one son. Phyliss, born on November
11, 1933, died as an infant of two months.
Theodore and Lydia Teske were faithful members of the Zion American Lutheran
Church at Eureka, where they lived until their deaths.
Lydia died at the Eureka Community Hospital on July 9, 1972, at the age of 59.
Theodore died seven months later on February 7, 1973, at the age of 68.
