GOTTHILF AND LYDIA MEHLHAFF
Gotthilf Mehlhaff was born November 14, 1900. He was one of twelve children
born to Jacob and Christina (Koerner) Mehlhaff, all of whom were born and grew
up two and one-half miles south of Eureka, South Dakota. Namely; Jacob
(1886-1960), John G. (1887-1976), Albina (1889-1977), Edward (1891-1982), Emil
(1893-1968), Julius (1895-1974), Ida (1897-1979), William (1898-), Gotthilf
(1900-1982), Otto (1902-1981), Herbert (1904-) and Arthur (1907-).
Lydia and Gotthilf Mehlhaff
Gotthilf's parents, Jacob and Christina Mehlhaff, were married January 3, 1885
and that same year homesteaded in Bauer Township, McPherson County, South
Dakota.
The family witnessed and aided in the building of the railroad and the
beginning of Eureka.
On November 26, 1925 Gotthilf married Lydia Dockter at Venturia, North Dakota.
She was born April 14, 1905 to August and Katherina (Stroh) Dockter.
The young couple then made their home on a farm three and one-half miles
southeast of town until October of 1960 when they retired and moved into
Eureka. Lydia died October 23, 1970. His second marriage took place April 14,
1971 to Mrs. Adeline Neuharth at Eureka. Gotthilf died at the Eureka Hospital
on March 27, 1982.
