He died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at Avera Eureka Community Health Services.
Milbert D. Neuharth, son of Edward and Adalina (Schnabel) Neuharth, was born May 14, 1939, in Eureka. This is where he was raised, graduating from Eureka High School with the class of 1957. He then attended college in Springfield for two years, studying architecture and carpentry. He then went to work for Albert Neuharth as a cabinet maker and electrician's assistant. He later worked for the Eureka Equity Exchange as a carpenter.
He was united in marriage to Edna Speidel on Sept. 24, 1960, in McLaughlin. In the early 1970s, he partnered with Stan Schaffer and started N&S Carpentry. In 1982, they started a lumber yard, naming it N&S Building Center. He was one of the original partners whom started Dakota Woodworking in 1988.
He was united in marriage to Percy Fischer Johnson on Jan. 7, 1997, in Laughlin, Nev. In 2003, he closed N&S Building Center and semi-retired. He continued to do carpentry work and, from 2005-09, he did crop insurance adjusting for NAU Insurance.
Milbert enjoyed traveling in his motor home and taking cruises. He was a big jokester and others always liked his joke telling. In the summer, he could be found relaxing on his pontoon and welcomed others onboard. When he wasn't working on a project or spending countless hours volunteering or attending meetings, he would sit down and play cards with friends.
He was a member of Eureka Reformed Church and was a past Sunday school superintendent. He was a past volunteer fireman, Jaycee president, city alderman and member of the S.D. Lumberman's Association. He was a member of the Yelduz Shrine, Masonic Lodge and Lions Club, and was on the WEB Water Development Board for nine years. Milbert was in Washington, D.C., with the WEB Water Development Board on 9/11 when the terrorist attacks occurred. He always remarked, ?It was quite an experience.?
Survivors include his wife, Percy; two daughters: Natalie (Jim Bomar) Neuharth of Aberdeen and Brenda (Dennis) Huber of Eureka; two stepsons: Cory Johnson and Clay Johnson, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one brother, Alfred (Laverne) Neuharth of Eureka; four grandchildren: Natasha Neuharth and Kent, David and Alex Huber; two stepgrandchildren: Chelsea and Brandon Johnson; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Taiya Johnson.
