Eureka, SD-Private Funeral Service for Richard Robert Hoff, 92, of Eureka will be 1:00 pm, Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Carlsen Funeral Home in Eureka. Rev. Ruth Clendenin will officiate. Burial will be in Eureka City Cemetery with military graveside rites by Fred Weller American Legion Post 186.
Richard died April 3, 2020 at Eureka Community Health Services Avera.
Richard was born December 8, 1927 to Jacob M. and Martha (Strobel) Hoff, 12 miles southeast of Eureka on the family homestead. This is where he grew up while attending country school. Richard did a lot of trapping of animals as a child. In February 1951, he entered the United States Army and served as a cook during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in February 1953. Richard then returned to the Eureka area and purchased his own farm.
Richard was united in marriage to DeLores LaMay Nitschke on June 7, 1953 in Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley, ND. They made their home on Richard?s farm seven miles east of Eureka where they raised small grains and livestock and had a milking operation for many years.
Richard and DeLores semi-retired 22 years ago and since then they rented their land out. DeLores died December 28, 2018 and Richard continued to live on the farm. He loved driving and taking day trips around the region.
Richard was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen and was a past member and Deacon of Eureka Reformed Church. He was also a 60 plus year member of Fred Weller American Legion Post 186.
Grateful for having shared his life are sons, Gerald Hoff of Bismarck, ND and Scottie (Melinda) Hoff of Eureka; daughter, Kathy (Mark) Bentz of Artas, SD; nine grandchildren, Karen Farstad, Alison (Casey) Zarr, Dr. Heather Hoff, Meaghan Hoff, Breanna Hoff, Janine (Tony) Goldade, Suzanne (Mark) Thompson, Michael Bentz and Kayloni Bentz; seven great-grandchildren, Jacob Farstad, Lucas Farstad, Gracie Zarr, Katie Zarr, Axel Goldade, Ace Goldade and Brooklyn Goldade and sister, Bernice Oster of Eureka.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Richard Duane ?Dickie?, brother, Raymond Hoff and sister, Gertrude Kimm.
Casketbearers will be Tony Goldade, Mark Thompson, Michael Bentz, Casey Zarr, Curtis Ylitalo and Jeffrey Gartner.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Eureka City Cemetery.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
