Clarence H. “Hoffie” Hoff, 79, Eureka, SD died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at his residence. Funeral services are 10:30 AM Monday, July 9, 2007 at the First Baptist Church, Eureka, with Pastor Gary Bergman and Pastor Perry Schnabel officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Fred Weller American Legion Post No. 186, Eureka, follows at the Eureka City Cemetery. Organist will be Esther Grosz and vocalists will be Donna Bertsch singing “Face to Face” and “On Eagle’s Wings”and Dennis and Margie Walker singing a gospel medley composed of "O, take my hand, dear Father", "Just a closer walk with Thee", and "Precious Lard, take my Hand". Congregational Hymns will be “How great thou Art” and “Great is thy Faithfulness”. Ushers will be Theophil Dohn and Jim Dohn.
Funeral Home visitation will be from 5:00-9:00 PM Sunday.
Clarence Henry Hoff, known by many as Hoffie, was born in Eureka on October 21, 1927. This is where he was raised and educated. He served his country in the United States Army, being inducted October 16, 1952. Following his honorable discharge on September 30, 1954, he returned to Eureka. He married Thelma Bertsch at the First Baptist Church in Eureka on February 17, 1957. Hoffie lived the remainder of his life in Eureka. Over the years he worked as a truck driver for several local businesses and worked on dam construction in Chamberlain and Pierre. More recently, he worked as a painter in Eureka, retiring in 1989. In retirement, he worked seven summers combining for Cliff Berreth and also assisted at Straub Funeral Home. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Fred Weller Legion Post in Eureka where he was on the drill squad for many years. As a younger man, he enjoyed golfing. One highlight for Hoffie was being on the same foursome with Lawrence Welk at a golf tournament in Linton, ND. Clarence was also well known as an avid longtime hunter.
Clarence is survived by Thelma, his wife of 50 years, 1 daughter Roberta Hoff of Eureka; 2 sisters-Gladys (Bob) Lunardi of Sacramento, CA and Lil (Edgar) Haas of Portland, OR.; and a sister-in-law Pat Hoff of Sacramento.
Family members preceding him in death include his father on March 22, 1964, his mother on May 6, 1971, 1 brother (Oliver), and 1 sister (Edna Kusler).
Honorary bearers will be Clarence’s hunting buddies.
Casketbearers will be Barry Lapp of Eureka, Tim Joachim of Fargo, ND, Steve Koch of Sanborn, MN, Greg Payne of Jordan, MN., Jason Lee of Cresbard, SD, and Kylin Schnabel of Steele, ND.
