Leo Stanley Hopfauf, 84, passed away Dec. 15, 2010, at Glendive Medical Center, Glendive, Mont. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Gene Lindemann as celebrant. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, with military honors provided by the VFW Post No. 1326 and American Legion of Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. followed by a parish vigil at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Monday.
Leo was born July 23, 1926. He was one of 16 children born to Stanislaus and Emilia (Leingang) Hopfauf in Flasher. Leo worked on the family farm until at the age of 18. In 1944, he joined the Army. He was stationed in Germany during World War II. In 1947, Leo married Josephine Friesz in Fallon. They raised four children.
In the mid-1950s, they moved to Montana, where Leo started his career as a carpenter working for others or owning his own construction company Hopfauf Construction. They lived in Billings, Hardin, Baker and Glendive. He was an exceptional finish carpenter and took pride in the detail work of a project. They also owned and operated a motel in Baker for several years.
After retiring in 1988, Leo and Jo enjoyed traveling across the country, visiting friends and relatives. Spending time with family and friends was very important to Leo. There was always a card game to be played, a song to be danced to or a story to be told.
In 2002, Leo and Jo moved to Bismarck and lived at Edgewood Vista. Jo died in 2003 and in 2009, Leo moved to Glendive, Mont., to be closer to family.
Religious faith was a large part of Leo's life. He was active in the Catholic church and an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fourth Degree. He was also a member of the Elks, VFW, American Legion and Moose Lodge.
Leo will be missed by his daughter, Loretta (Rocky) Graham, Marmarth; sons, Thomas (Karen), Hardin, Mont., Edwin (Shelley), Glasgow, Mont., and Anton (Helen), Waukegan, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Bohl, Genny Eckroth, Frances Bohl, Clem (Gene) Volk and Agnes Eckroth, all of Bismarck; brothers, Anton (Frances), Bismarck, and Florian (Georgia), Culbertson, Mont.; and sister-in-law, Katheryn Hopfauf, Mandan.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jo; sisters, Katherine (Joe) Erhardt, Magdalin (Jacob) Hellman, Perpetua (Anton) Bullinger, Eva (Adam) Bernhardt and infants, Mary and Loretta; brothers, Ralph and Adam; and brothers-in-law, Xavier and George Bohl and Peter and Ray Eckroth.

GLENDIVE — Leo Stanley Hopfauf, 84, passed away Dec. 15, 2010, at Glendive Montana Medical Center, Glendive.
