Walter U. Carnes, 87, of West Deer, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, in UPMC St. Margaret.
He was born July 25, 1919, in New Castle and in addition to his parents was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mildred (Zwergel) Carnes, who died June 26, 2005, and whom he married Sept. 5, 1942.
Mr. Carnes was an active member of St. Catherine of Sweden Roman Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister and on the bereavement committee. He was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service, a World War II Army veteran and a member of Moose Lodge 46 and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed hunting and fishing; will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be missed greatly by his family, friends and church community.
Surviving are children Barbara (Myles) Vogel, of Glenarm, Md., Elizabeth (Patrick) Laughlin and William Carnes, of Lancaster, Patricia (Paul) Bridge, of Georgetown, Ky., and Michael (Michele) Carnes, of Tarentum; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and sister Joanne Stockhow.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the HERBERT R. KING JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 8 at 2841 Woodland Circle, Hampton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Catherine of Sweden Church, Hampton.
Interment will be in Christ Our Redeemer (North Side Catholic) Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Associatioin, Pittsburgh Office, 300 Penn Center Blvd., Suite 602, Pittsburgh, PA 15235
