Bernice Mettler, 79, of Menno died at the Menno-Olivet Care Center in Menno on Monday, April 14, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Friday, April 18, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Menno with the Rev. David Ellis officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery, Menno, SD. Visitations will be Thursday, April 17th from 1-9 pm at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home in Menno with the family present from 6:30-9 pm. A scripture service will begin at 7:30 pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Steven Knodel, Keith Knodel, Kelly Knodel, Brad Knodel, Rick Mettler, and Darus Mettler.
Bernice Edna (Knodel) Mettler was born on November 24, 1928 on a farm southwest of Freeman, SD to Reinhold and Martha (Heckenlaible) Knodel. She was baptized in infancy on January 20, 1929 at Trinity Lutheran Heilbronn near Freeman, by Rev. G. Schaefer. She was confirmed on June 13, 1943 by the Rev. R.R. Schulz at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Menno, South Dakota. Bernice attended country school at Valley District 7 and Freeman High School.
Bernice was united in marriage to Reno Mettler on September 4, 1949 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Menno, by Rev. Hans Weidenman. To this union, a son, Michael was born on June 23, 1956. He died on November 23, 1956. Together Reno and Bernice farmed in the Menno area until 1993 when they moved into Menno.
Bernice served her church in several ways and also on many committees. She enjoyed baking, gardening, and crocheting. Together Reno and Bernice enjoyed dancing whenever they were given the opportunity. She loved spending time with her nephews and nieces and their families. She enjoyed teaching them how to make traditional family dishes and educating them on family history. They will all remember her fondly as someone who loved them unconditionally.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Michael, her two brothers, Raymond and Clifford, and a brother-in-law Leroy Mettler.
She is survived by her husband Reno, Menno; nephews and nieces Steven (Shirley) Knodel, Scottsbluff, NE; Keith (Betsy) Knodel, Freeman; Karen (Jon) Nealis, Lexington, KY; Kelly Knodel, Freeman; Patricia (Jim) McMahon, Redlands, CA; Marilyn (Lanny) Long, Albion, NE; James (Eileen) Knodel, West Point, NE; Barbara (Terry) Buechler, Fort Collins, CO; Rick Mettler, Lincoln, NE; Darus (Laura) Mettler, Norfolk, NE; and Philip (Elisa) Heckenlaible, Sioux Falls, SD; many great nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law Viella Knodel, Freeman; Verna Knodel, Lexington, KY; Kathleen Mettler, Menno; Priscilla (Ray) Heckenlaible, Menno, as well as many friends.
