- [S927] Obituary.
Vera Hulda (Wollman) Sayler, of Menno, SD, was born on June 5, 1917, the daughter of August and Emma (Tadeyeske) Wollman; wife of John; mother of Walter, Harvey, Joan and Gary; grandma to 9; and great-grandma to 12. She died February 8, 2009. During her 91 years on this earth, Vera loved The Lord and loved her family. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at Salem Reformed Church, Menno, with Rev. Michael Hecht officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. Visitations will be 4-8 PM, Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Jeffery Sayler, Brian Robb, Scott Nusz, Rusty Hughell, Matthew Sayler, and Jonathan Sayler. Her last years were spent as a resident of the Menno-Olivet Care Center. Before then, Vera lived in her home in Menno, SD, a location which allowed her the enjoyment of hearing nearby school children's voices and of shaded trees that displayed vivid colors in the fall. Vera's life was spent dedicated to her husband John, whom she married on December 9, 1937. They farmed south of Menno until 1962 when they moved to town. Vera's role as a farmwife included raising chickens, growing and canning vegetables from her garden, and preparing meals for the family. Vera continued gardening in town; her blossoming peony plants were enjoyed by many. John and Vera were blessed with four children: Walter, Harvey, Joan and Gary. Vera often told stories of raising them alongside their many cousins. There were many family get-togethers that were often the setting of aunts and uncles watching children grow up side-by-side. Their son Harvey died in his sleep at the age of 5 after saying his bedtime prayers. Vera was baptized on July 7, 1917, and confirmed on May 8, 1932, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Upon marriage, she became a faithful member of the Salem Reformed Church. Her grandchildren will tell you that Grandma's signature trademark was her homemade bread and apple pies. She and Grandpa never allowed a grandchild to leave their house with an empty stomach, whether they were offered a piece of thick buttered bread, a hearty slice of pie with vanilla ice cream, or a fresh chunk of watermelon. Grandma's Christmas Day meal of ham and baked potatoes, alongside the red and green Jello salad, invokes fond memories for every Sayler family member. Vera was preceded in death by husband John, who died February 4, 1995; son Harvey, sister Lydia (Ruben) Ulmer, brothers Edwin and Helmuth, and her parents. Her memory is cherished by her children Walter and Sharon Sayler of Menno; Joan and Gerald Nusz of Menno; and Gary and Sally Sayler of Coleridge, NE. Siblings include Ella (Ephraim) Bertsch, Eugene (Olive) Wollman, Arlene (Richard) Gall; sisters-in-law, Viola (Helmuth) Wollman, Clara (Emil) Bittner, and brother-in-law, Richard (Ida) Sayler. Vera's grandchildren include Jeff and Vickey Sayler; Shelly and Terry Rotert; Paula and Brian Robb; Julie and Marc Mooney; Scott and Amy Nusz; Matthew Sayler; Laurie and Rusty Hughell; Dana and Wylie Osborne; and Jonathan Sayler. Her great-grandchildren Joshua and Stefannie; Brittany and Taylar; Megan; Ben, Sam and Claire; Adrian, Grace and Michael; and Jacob continue the legacy that Vera and John left to the world. Thanks be to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
