Leontine “Tina” McKay,95, of Cherokee, Iowa, went to be with her Lord on Friday evening, June 22, 2012 at Careage Hills in Cherokee.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 26th, at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Burial will be in the Meriden Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Visitation will be on Monday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Tina was born on February 10, 1917, nine miles west of Freeman, S.D., in the same house where her father and all 14 of her siblings were born. She was the second child of Emanuel & Henrietta (Stoller) Bertsch. There Tina was raised and went to the Delzer School District #97 through the 8th grade. She was baptized as an infant at the Johannestal Reformed Church, rural Freeman by Rev. M.C. Buettello and also confirmed at the same church by Rev. William Huenemann. She attended country school in South Dakota and in 1979 received her GED.
In the 1940’s during WW II, Tina and her sister Irene went to California to get jobs. Tina worked at McClellan Airplane Factory as a riveter. On November 7, 1952 she married Ted R. McKay at Sacramento, California. Tina and Ted lived in California, moved to Tennessee in 1959, to Menno, S.D. in 1965 and then to Meriden, Iowa in 1969. Shortly before her husband Ted passed away in 1980 they moved to an apartment in Cherokee, Iowa. Tina learned how to drive a car at 60 years of age and did home health care. She was a housekeeper for Oscar Gustafson for several years. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Church Circle. She did foster parenting, enjoyed quilting, gardening and time spent with her family and her church family.
She is survived by her children, Danny McKay of Ben Salem, PA., David (Kathy) McKay of Hudson, WI; 5 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren; sisters: Ida Bertsch Doyle of Yankton, S.D.; O’Linda Bertsch (Charlie) Bell of Hutchinson, KS. three brothers: Gideon (Arlene) Bertsch of Menno, S.D., Ewald (Norma) Bertsch of Corinth, TX., and Leroy (Norma) Bertsch of Socorro, N.M.; also many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ted on May 4, 1980, a daughter Betty Ann McKay Lambert, 4 sisters Tillie Bertsch Bender York, Irene Bertsch Clark, Leona Bertsch Heckenlaible and Erna Bertsch Schoon; 5 brothers Ruben, Ephriam, Lorenz, Elmer and Martin Bertsch.
