- [S927] Obituary.
LaRue Fyock of Templeton, who died Thanksgiving Day, is remembered for her unique service as Western Pennsylvania's first woman firefighter and an emergency medical technician (EMT) who was first at the scene of emergencies in Templeton for many years. She was also a medical technician for Kittanning Hose Co., 6 and an umpire of little league baseball games in Templeton. LaRue enjoyed sports, both as a spectator and participant, and often could be found on the ball field or basketball court in the village. Kathy Powell, wife of Deric Powell, former chief of Pine Township Templeton Fire Department, said Fyock will be sorely missed "She was very well thought of," she said. "Everyone will miss her." Larry Heasley, historian for the Pine Township-Templeton Fire Department, said Fyock was already active in the fire company when she was nominated for full membership in the fire company in 1969-70. She was the companys' licensed radio operator with EOC. In addition to acting as radio operator, Heasley said, she provided oxygen to anyone that needed it and directed traffic. Heasley said he nominated her for membership, and that she was unanimously elected by all the firemen to full membership in the company. "At the time, she was the first (woman firefighter) in Armstrong County," he said. The Armstrong County Firemens' Association, he said, refused to grant her membership in that organization for a full year. Finally, he said, they admitted her because they knew they couldn't have a firefighter going to fires without insurance. In addition to her services during fires and as an EMT, he said, she provided daily visits to the elderly In the community who needed Insulin shots as well as other help before the Visiting Nurses' Association began providing those services.
