Conrad (believed to be pronounced Coon-rod) Friedly, son of Georg Jakob and Barbara (Daussmann) Friedly, was born August 5, 1826 in Vorderseidenthal, Germany. It is thought that after his parents died, Nicolaus and Margaretha (Neuhardt) Jochum took him under their wing and brought him to America with them in 1843, landing in Port Philadelphia. This was the story passed down to his daughter, Mamie Edith's, descendants who were also told that Conrad set up the tailoring trade in Philadelphia before settling in Zion, Centre County, Pennsylvania. Conrad's brother Georg Friedel's descendants were told that both Conrad and Georg spent some time in New York practicing the tailoring trade before coming to Pennsylvania, but it is not known how long they were in New York, if in fact they were there first.
On March 13, 1851 Conrad married Philippine Caroline Jochum, daughter of Nicolaus and Margaretha Jochum. (Some say the spelling of their last name is Yochum instead of Jochum. I don't really know for sure but in looking at some documents I've had the chance to see it could be either spelled with a Y or the J. German writing leaves something to the imagination when I have to read it. You as the readers will have to use it any way you choose but we are spelling it with the J.) Philippine was born April 14, 1830 in Rumbach, Germany. The two families lived in the same area in Bavaria, Germany.
It is known that Conrad and his brother, Georg Jakob Friedel (German spelling of Friedley), ran a tailoring shop in Zion, Pennsylvania. Descendants of Georg, who remained in Zion, still own the same building and had their business in it for a while but is now used as a storage building.
There were eight children born to Conrad and Philippine while they lived in Zion: David, born April 28, 1852; Harvey, born April 27, 1854; Adam, born October 6, 1855; Gustavus Adolphus, born May 6, 1858; Phoebe Abigale, born February 18, 1860; Lewis Maximilian, born May 2, 1861; Fredrick Harvey, born April 16, 1863; and Mamie Edith, born January 17, 1866. The 1860 census of Walker Township shows that Conrad's brother, Georg and his wife, Elisabeth, shared the same household.
Conrad and Philippine moved with their family to Morgan County, Missouri in early April of 1866. According to the Morgan County records dated 1866, their family at the time of arrival consisted of: David, 14; Adam, 10; Gustavus, eight; Phoebe, six; Lewis M., five; Fred H., three; and Edith, three months. Harvey had died December 17, 1859.
According to Morgan County records, Conrad made land purchases of 20 acres April 5, 1866 from W. Pennebaker and wife Sarah, $250; 165 acres June 25 1866 from James J. Morris and wife, $1320 (mortgage on this was $500); and 3.87 acres August 1, 1869 from Wm. J. Lyles and wife Martha E., $50. The Morris farm was located northwest of Versailles near the old Ouchita Coal Mines.
After moving to Morgan County, Conrad farmed with the help of his sons. To help support his large family, Conrad opened a tailoring shop in Versailles. This was advertised in the Morgan County Banner of August 4, 1866. His first shop was located in the front room of the harness shop on the north side of the public square. Conrad and Philippine had one child after coming to Morgan County. Caroline was born on July 8, 1869 but lived only eight months, passing away March 28, 1870. She was buried in the Mt. Nebo Cemetery northwest of Versailles.
A double wedding was held on September 21, 1875 when their daughter, Phoebe Abigale Friedly married Thomas Edgecomb Merriott and Thomas' sister, Ruby Ann Merriott married Phoebe's brother David Friedly. The two couples made their home in Morgan County a number of years, later moving to Henry County. In 1878, Gustavus Friedly married Cordelia Beaty. They farmed northwest of Versailles for several years, then moved to Henry County, too. They spent their later years in Johnson County.
Conrad died suddenly on February 10, 1880 at 53 years of age. He was buried in Mt. Nebo Cemetery. His wife, Philippine, stayed on the family farm after his death until all the remaining children at home were married. In September 1880, Adam Friedly married Barbara Jane Berkstresser. They spent their married life on a farm north of Versailles. Edith Friedly married George Stuart in 1883. They farmed in Morgan County for a number of years. Fred H. Friedly married Donnie Napier in February 1885. They spent their entire married life on a farm west of Versailles. The remaining child at home, Lewis Maximilian Friedly, married Elisa Annie Rumans in April 1885. They lived on the family farm for a number of years, later purchasing land near by. They too moved to Henry County later on.
Philippine Friedly spent her remaining years in the homes of her children, passing away November 8, 1907 at the home of her son, Lewis M. (Max) Friedly. She is buried at her busband's side in Mt. Nebo Cemetery northwest of Versailles.

Konrad married Philippina Karolina Jochem on 13 Mar 1851 in Zion, Centre County, Pennsylvania, USA. Philippina (daughter of Nikolaus Jochem and Maria Margaretha Neuhardt) was born on 24 Apr 1830 in Rumbach, Pfalz, Bayern; died on 8 Nov 1907 in Versailles, Morgan County, Missouri, USA; was buried in Mount Nebo Cemetery, Haw Creek Township, Morgan County, Missouri, USA.
