FRED PRESZLER Embarking to the United States when he was ten years old, Fred Preszler took up his abode with his parents at Menno, Dakota Territory, in 1874. Mr. Preszler was born in Kassel, South Russia, on March 26, 1864. He remained with his parents in the southern part of the territory until he was twenty-one years of age, when he became possessed with the desire to establish a home of his own. Rumors were afloat in this section that there was land to be had for the asking in the northern section of the territory. It was on May 5, 1885, when Fred Preszler homesteaded on three quarters of land one mile south of the present site of Eureka, where he resided for twenty-one years. His possessions were not many when he arrived in Eureka; a plow, a drag, two horses and two cows. The season being far advanced when he arrived on his newly acquired farm, only a few acres of flax could be sown for that year's crop. During the first summer Mr. Preszler spent in this territory he inherited $100.00 with which he was able to build a small house and barn, and had money enough left to take him back to Menno to visit his parents. Upon returning, he found employment on the railroad and remained at this work through the summer of 1886. "I cannot say too much about the little store in Eureka at that time," said Mr. Preszler. "The store was very small and was operated by Mr. Werre. He kept us well supplied with many of the essentials, such as sugar, salt and coffee." In 1905, Mr. Preszler decided to go into business and at this time purchased the general merchandise store from Daniel Rietz. He remained in this business until 1912, when he retired from active service in favor of his ever growing farm interests. He owned a fine farm and was particularly interested in raising thoroughbred live stock. Having lost his life's companion in the death of his wife, he was confronted with the problem of raising a family of small children. On December 20, 1910, Mr. Preszler remarried, taking for his second wife Mrs. Fred Hoff, nee Margaret Guthmiller, who lived ten miles east of Eureka. Mr. Preszler remained on the farm until 1917, and it was during this time that he reached the height of his land possessions, owning fifteen quarters. He was always ready and willing to assist in furthering community projects, including the erection of his church, German Reform, the Lutheran college, and at one time was a stockholder in the German newspaper, The Rundschau. Again he received the call to enter into business and purchased an interest in a hardware store at Wishek, North Dakota. Mr. Preszler remained in this business until 1923, when he disposed of his interest and retired from active life. He now resides at Wishek, North Dakota. [Harold M Wiest.FTW]Emigrated to Rohrbach in 1809 with his first wife Philippina (see Faijok Fam #4, 1816 Rohrba ch Census). Johann Georg Feiock [spelled Veiock in the Pfalz] was born about 1804, probably in Darstein, Pfalz--he was listed as 45 in 1850 & 52 in the 1858 census; but his sister, Jakobina was born in 1805 [based on her age at death] and he is older. I have not been able to find the Pfalz records for this family. They lived in Darstein, a village a couple km north of Vorderweidental. There are no church records after 1798, so one can only rely on the civil records, which do exist. However, in 1998, we were unable to spend enough time at the Standesamt in Bad Bergzabern to locate these records. One day we hope to do more searching there or obtain information by mail. Johann Georg moved to Kischinew [now Chischinau, capital of Moldova], probably in the early 1860s, but certainly after the 1858 census. We have not found a death record for Johann Georg Feiock, but he died before May1864. His son, Jacob [born 1837 Rohrbach], was married in Chotin [near Kischinew] on 3 May 1864, to Karolina Kulmann [who came from Uskerthal in Galicia]. The marriage records describes Jacob's parents as--Georg Feijak, a Dienst [laborer] of Lubel gesellschaft [a company in Kischenew] and Barbara, both deceased [the 1858 census says Barbara died in 1855]. Jacob was amachinist by Riegler [the name of his employer in Kischinew]. What happenedto the couple is unknown to me, but they might have moved to Galicia, as Ihave had email contact with an American descendent of a Jacob Feiock, whoemigrated from Austrian Galicia, whose age is awfully close.INFO FROM TOM STANGL (5 FEB 2001)
